Trivia
Trivia brain teasers have some element of trivia in them, but they are not just pure trivia questions.Trivia
An ancient world I once did rule,
filling men with trepidation.
All deadly sins I thee did worship,
with a passion and rage so fierce.
My name was sovereign; so noble and refined,
but a number of a man also knew me.
This figure is long and complex by nature,
six hundred three score and six.
Who am I?

Hint
Six hundred three score and six = 666Answer
The Emperor, Caesar Nero.666 is the Aramaic numerical equivalent of Nero's name.
Much of the Bible focuses on the power of numbers, for example, The Trinity (3); The Pentateuch (the first 5 books of the Old Testament); the 12 Tribes of Israel; the 12 Apostles; the Resurrection in 3 days; Moses' 40 years in the desert; Jesus' 40 days in the desert; and so on. Likewise, each Hebrew letter is represented by a different number. For example, The Hebrew of David is DWD (DaWiD)...dwd=4-6-4(14).
Similarly, the Latin name of Nero Caesar or Caesar Nero, an "n" can also be added, resulting in Neron Caesar. Next the Latin is transliterated into Aramaic, resulting in 'nrwn qsr', which when using the numeric equivalent of the letters, then adds up to 666 as follows:
Nun = 50
Resh = 200
Waw = 6
Nun = 50
Qoph = 100
Samech = 60
Resh = 200
Sorry for ruining your Hollywood idea of the devil as 666. Arguably though, Nero and Satan were pretty close!

My goodness that was hard, but very informative! I would never have known that answer. Great information in your answer. I'm impressed!
Didn't get the numerical link, but I worked on the rest of the clues and managed to get it down to about two or three possibilities, and considering the timing, the exploits of this particular one to stop a certain individual, I thought that someone somewhere must have twisted his name to reach this.
(Hey kids, Christianity is not only fun, it's mathematical!)

You are right Blagh, it's very, very mathematical. For instance, have a count of ALL the people mentioned in Chapter 1 of Matthew. There are 14 names divided into 3 separate groups; all in the lineage of David. DWD (David)=4+6+4. Not every person has been included in this family tree as per the Old Testament, but Matthew has 'doctored' the lineage a little to fit 14 into 3 (perhaps the idea of Trinity) groups to show that Jesus is from the House of David. Numbers were very powerful.
While interesting, the premise for the teaser is incorrect. The Bible says that 666 is the "number of the beast" (Rev. 13:1, and while several interpretations have been put forward as to who the beast is, most non-Roman Catholic Christians believe it to be the Antichrist (Jehovah's Witnesses actually believe the beast to be government). While not necessarily Satan, the Antichrist is supposedly a false prophet sent to make way for Satan to be worshipped as God and Savior.
I forgot about the smilie converter. That was Revelations 13:18.
Thanks for your contribution. That I appreciate, but you forgot to include the entire quote from Revelation: 'This calls for wisdom: let anyone with understanding calculate the number of the beast, FOR IT IS THE NUMBER OF A MAN. Its number is six hundred sixty-six'. Whilst I don't want to get into a theological debate, I just want to say that it is fact that names in the Aramaic language are numerical in composition. The number 666 is the equivalent to Nero. Roman Catholic and many Protestant religions also interpret 13:1 (the beast rising out of the sea) to be a metaphor for the Roman Empire attacking from the Meditteranean Sea. Ones view would probably be based on how literally one would read this. Remember, Revelation was written in a highly poetic and metaphoric language, and at a time when Christianity was subjected to some of the most vilest and evilest of persecutions.
Nicely written poem- I got the answer and, after reading the comments especially, food for thought. Revelations is quite a puzzle to discern.
On a lighter note...
It all reminded me of a great recap episode of "Wait, wait, don't tell me" (NPR). They said that in a recently discovered ancient text, the "Number of the Beast" was written 616. So maybe Satan was living in Michigan and wondering why no one was giving him a call

Huh...? I found this to be too difficult to be fun. Is it written correctly?
"All deadly sins I thee did worship," ?
Doesn't this translate to All deadly sins I you worshiped?
"but a number of a man also knew me." Who is this referring to?
It is clear that you and Phrebh are very knowledgeable in the topic. I enjoyed the polite debate and learned something new today.

Urban mything history. Check out the real Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus or Nero Claudius Caesar as Roman historian would refer to him. No 666 here.
Sorry can't beleive in the whole numbers thing. If there was anything to it then the world would have ended June sixth of the year six. Or perhaps it did end and we are not real?
