Katie's Birthday Party
Logic-Grid
Logic Grid puzzles come with a handy interactive grid that will help you solve the puzzle based on the given clues.Logic-Grid
Katie has a birthday party. She has invited 5 friends (Julie, Suzie, Yasmin, David, Richard) and their spouses (Drew, Barry, Conner, Sally, James) to her party. Each friend brings a gift (music box, scarf, necklace, perfume, handbag) and dessert (apple pie, chocolate cake, muffins, cupcakes, cookies) and they all arrive at different time (7:00, 7:15, 7:30, 7:45, 8:00). So try to find the spouses, the gifts, the desserts, and the arrival time of each friend.
1. The five friends are: Julie, the one who arrives last, the one who brings the muffins, the one whose husband is Barry, and the one who brings the perfume.
2. Neither David nor Richard arrives first, but one of them arrives last.
3. Yasmin doesn't like eating or cooking fruit.
4. James (who shares his initial with his wife) is the husband who arrives first.
5. Katie's female friends are the ones who bring the necklace, the music box, and the handbag.
6. Julie's husband is a musician so he likes gifts about music.
7. Neither Suzie nor Julie is a fan of chocolate.
8. The guest who arrives second either brings the handbag or brings the chocolate cake.
9. Neither Conner's wife nor Yasmin brings the cupcakes.
10. Sally, whose husband neither likes perfumes nor cupcakes, is famous for her delicious cookies.
11. David and his wife arrive 30 minutes later than the guest who brings the muffins.
12. The guest who brings the cupcakes is the one who arrives after the guest who brings the necklace.

First comment. Might I suggest telling people that Drew is female.
I liked the teaser, it had a fun story line. I do agree that there may be some confusion with drew being a girl.
Thank you I'm glad you liked it. I offered to add this information as a hint, I hope it can help the others.
I came up with a totally different solution but can't see where it's wrong. Can anyone point out the error?
Julie, James, music box, apple pie, 70
Suzie, Connor, handbag, muffins, 7:15
Yasmin, Barry, necklace, chocolate cake, 7:30
Drew, Richard, perfume, cupcakes, 7:45
Sally, David, scarf, cookies, 80
Julie, James, music box, apple pie, 70
Suzie, Connor, handbag, muffins, 7:15
Yasmin, Barry, necklace, chocolate cake, 7:30
Drew, Richard, perfume, cupcakes, 7:45
Sally, David, scarf, cookies, 80
Sorry. Just reread my comment. I had Suzie and Yasmin's times reversed. Suzie was 7:30 and Yasmin was 7:15. That's necessary to make David arrive 30 minutes later.
Arrrrrgh! Yay, finally figured it out. Took three tries to finally solve.
Re: Drew being female - when you match up the male spouses, with female friends, Drew has to be female.

I still don't see why this solution won't also work:
Julie, James, music box, apple pie, 70
Suzie, Connor, handbag, muffins, 7:30
Yasmin, Barry, necklace, chocolate cake, 7:15
Drew, Richard, perfume, cupcakes, 7:45
Sally, David, scarf, cookies, 80
Julie, James, music box, apple pie, 70
Suzie, Connor, handbag, muffins, 7:30
Yasmin, Barry, necklace, chocolate cake, 7:15
Drew, Richard, perfume, cupcakes, 7:45
Sally, David, scarf, cookies, 80
The clues for getting the arrival times of Suzie, Yazmine, David and Richard are missing.....
Clue #8 states "The guest who arrives second either brings the handbag(Suzie) or brings the chocolate cake (Yasmine)." But there is no clue for when either lady may have arrived so I just decided to have Suzie arrive at 7:15.
Getting the arrival time correct for David and Richard is dependent on which lady got there at either 7:15 or 7:30 Because of clue #11 which states "David and his wife arrive 30 minutes later than the guest who brings the muffins."

I agree with mama.... there are two solutions to this.
There is only one unique solution, the solution given by mamachew doesn't satisfy clue 12 - the cupcakes must arrive right after the necklace. The only way to do that is to have David with Drew at 7:45.
Thanks for posting this. I really enjoyed it - great job!
Thank you I'm glad you liked it...
Actually, clue #12 does not include the phrase "right after." It just says "after" which makes the timing piece very ambiguous. 7:45 is AFTER 7:15, so I think there are two solutions because the wording is open to interpretation. This still is a very nice puzzle--lots of excellent clues that make you think.
yay! i got this!! great teaser. though i didnt find it confusing, i do think the phrase "after" should be changed to "right after".
Good teaser, lots of fun. The fact that Drew is a female was easy to discern without the hint based on the obvious genders of the other five guests. The were 3 who definitely male, 2 who you know are female. That means that Drew had to be female. That shouldn't have needed to be pointed out.
This was an excellent challenge. I got it right on the first try but took at least 2 hrs to solve.
Very challenginging puzzle! I thought your clues were sufficient to determine who was male and female and when each arrived. Good job!
Awesome! I like figuring out who came first and last.
@mamachew; clue 12 states "...THE ONE who arrived after...". That implies "immediately after", not "sometime after".
Enjoyable, but I found the need to assume that Richard was heterosexual disappointing. Logic grids shouldn't require assumptions.
Ahhhhhh, Drew. It should be obvious that drew is a woman just from context, but when gender specifics matter unisex names are aggravating. Good puzzle otherwise
Great puzzle! Can I suggest that you state these are all heterosexual couples? Maybe it's just me but I did not assume these were all straight couples; I kept the possibility open that some of the marriages might be between two gay persons.
Hmm...
I had David with Sally and Richard with Drew. I also had Yasmin and Barry arriving at 7:15 with the necklace and choc cake and Suzie and Conner with the handbag and muffins at 7:30.
The clues about either David and Richard being the last and the handbag or choc cake being second made it really confusing.

This was so satisfying to complete. I actually had to use the number boxes at the very end but it worked out. It took me a while to realise that all the couples were probably meant to be heterosexual as well, so could be information worth mentioning! Great puzzle
If it matters, I agree with Mama and disagree with Spike on clue #12, I spent half an hour trying to decide whether the cup cakes were immediately after the necklace, or at some point after. As I couldn't find anything to disprove it I plumped for immediately after, and everything fell into place.
The sense of triumph at solving it just adds to the pleasure of completing the puzzle. I hope the author is pleased that their work is giving so much pleasure for so many people for so many years. Thanks.
