Brain Teasers
Bags of Kittens
Six men have 6 bags each. In every bag there are 6 cats, each cat has 6 kittens. How many legs in all?
Answer
6,060Here is how you get the answer:
You go 6*2 for the mens legs, so that is 12. Put that number off to the side.
Then you go 6*6 for the bags so that is 36. You go 36*6 for the number of cats and that is 216. You then take 216*4 for the legs, and then you should get 864 (now put that number off to the side).
You now take 216*6 (1296) for the number of kittens and then 1296*4 and you should get 5,184 for the kittens legs (keep that number) because you already multiplied the legs together you don't have to do it again.
Now here is how you get 6,060:
5,184 + 864 + 12 = 6,060
Did you get it yet?

you didn't say the six men had six bags each, just that six men had six bags, this could mean six bags between six men, ie: one each.
It was fun, but I also thought that you meant 6 men with a bag each. I came up with 1020.
I agree with the above. I was thinking 6 bags total. Puzzles should be more clear.
sorry for the confussion i will state them more clearly in the future sorry
I heard this one at school. I LOVE cats & kittens etc. But I still forgot the answer. Good one, watupchicks.
cool
poor cats/kittens!!! that cant be too comfortable in BAGS
ack i really have a question, but to state it and point out my problem i have with your explanation, i would practically give away the problem for those people who the comments first. what do i do
ok imma do it anyways...if its bad of me to do, or if i shouldnt say what i'm gonna, just delete the post. if ppl read the comments first they are trying to cheat anyways...lol....don't get mad at me ppl...its just bugging me.
ok i just have a question. i followed your explanation through the men, cats, and cats legs. then you said 864 * 6 for the kittens. that i don't get. if you are doing each seperatly...you should have said 216*6 to get number of kittens (1296) then followed up on that with 1296*4 to get the 5184 legs for the kittens alone. in your explanation you seem to state that the cats and the kittens legs together equal 5184, which would change the answer, yet you get the same final answer. so therefore your math must be correct, but you skipped a vital step in the explanation, which may REALLY confuse people who read to find out how and why they were wrong....just a thought.
I hate phrase "you go 6*2."
It make me feel like I listen Jackie Wong. maybe better much write "you smurf 6*2."
Who put this form of ill in illiterate?

Old puzzle but a goodie. I don't get some of the comments. Bags with legs? Where?
This answer is WRONG, by far your calculations are Correct but missed a Vital part. The main question states legs in all. ( you only calculated the men legs which is 12 and the kittens legs which is 5184 but what about the momma cat legs that would be (5184) also. Right? so now lets do the math. we have 5184*2=10368 (for cats and kittens) plus 12 which equals a grand total of (10380)
mfountain, it is you who is WRONG.
There are 216 (adult) cats and 1296 kittens for a total of 1512 felines, having 6048 legs. The twelve human legs make 6060.
Reread the answer; it's all there.

I liked the problem better when going to St. Ives.
