Not neccessarily true. They could have played 6 games, Mary winning 3 and Jay winning 3. Jay would have still won 3 games and Mary still would have won 3 dollars, she just wouldn't have ended up with 3 more dollars than she started with.
this ias the only mathproblem i enjoyed. i go on braingle to get away from homework not to work
the wording needs to be improved, 'won $3' implies a profit of $3, it would be better to state 'ended up with $3 at the end'
