Brain Teasers
Stormy Story
A man burst into a police station soaking wet and starts screaming "MY WIFE HAS BEEN MURDERED MY WIFE HAS BEEN MURDERED!"
A police officer asked what happened and the man explained that when they were walking along the cliffs of the shore, he heard a big roll of thunder come out of nowhere. He turned around startled to see what happened and then a huge bolt of lightning struck and his wife screamed. He turned around and saw his wife laying mangled on the sharp rocks of the cliff bottom, and he saw a man running away.
The officer said that the man was obviously lying and had him arrested for the murder of his wife. How did the officer know?

Answer
The lightning would travel faster than the thunder so the man's story would be inaccurate since he says he heard the thunder, then saw the lightning.Hide Answer Show Answer

A good friend of ours was killed by lightening in cambodia last MArch. His friend (who we did not know) was hurt. he tells us that although he heard the thunder he did not see any lightening. From a personal perspective our entire family are now less bothered by ligtening as we feel the odds of the same thing happening to two people from one circle of friends is so extreem we MUST be safe!!!
yes and the odds of being struck by lightning are very very high so dont fear
The odds of being struck by lightning are better than winning 1st prize at the lottery so beware if you've won...
Subtle clues in the writing indicated a simple puzzle with a simple answer. For starters, the puzzle does not belong in logic. Second: thunder and lightening in the description is meaningless, and therefore obviously relevant to the solution. Lastly: Cops are not known to be tops in their class, and this one obviously assumes that storms can only produce lightening in series, and only after each following thunder sound has been heard by everyone who sees the flash of lightening.
As sillywilly notes, this puzzle as posed belongs in Science or Situation, not Logic, and
who's to say that the thunder didn't come from a previous (unseen) lightning bolt?
The most suspicious behavior of the husband, though, comes at the very beginning of
the teaser, when he shouts "my wife has been murdered!" Did he think that this mysterious
stranger arranged for a lightning bolt to hit his wife? Wouldn't the natural reaction of
an innocent man be to say "my wife's been hurt - she's been hit by lightning" rather than to
assume murder?
