Lost City of Kebabylon
Once again, Madadia's insipid explorer, Wigan Smith, is on the trail of lost treasure. He has come across a map showing that somewhere in the middle of the Chillivalley desert, there is the lost city of "Kebabylon".
To reach it, he will have to travel overland by foot from the coast. On a trek like this, each person who goes on the journey can only carry enough rations for one person for five days, and the farthest Wigan Smith and his group can travel in one day is 30 miles. Also, "Kebabylon" is 120 miles from the starting point.
What Wigan Smith is trying to figure out is the fewest number of persons, including himself, that he will need in his group so that he can reach the "Kebabylon", stay overnight, and then return to the coast without running out of supplies.
How many persons (including himself) will Wigan Smith need to accomplish this mission?
Bear in mind that Wigan Smith has no moral character when it comes to money and wealth.

Hint
Only Wigan needs to make the whole journey!Answer
3 people (Wigan Smith and 2 others)This solution only applies because Wigan Smith has no moral character.
As each person can carry five days rations for 1 person , and that the total journey will require 8 days (4 days there, overnight stay, then 4 days back), then the journey would seem impossible. However, Smith and 2 companions could travel 2 days and have 3 rations each. If one companion "Mysteriously died" that night, Smith and his other companion would have 4.5 rations each. At the end of the fourth day they would have 2.5 ration each. If Smith's last companion "Mysteriously died" that night, he would have 5 rations, which would be more than enough to stay an extra day and return to the coast.

Fair enough. Or Wigan can dispose of
all of his companions on the third night,
which might keep the survivor(s) from getting
suspicious. But let me pose a counter-problem:
how many explorers does it take if all explorers
must survive to return to the coast, and if
no supplies may be cached enroute (any
supplies left behind get eaten by jungle creatures)?

OK, try this.I think it would be $ including Wigan Smith.
It is given that each person can only carry enough rations for five days. And there are 4 persons. Hence, total of 20 days rations is available.
First Day : 4 days of rations are used up. One person goes back using one day of rations for the return trip. The rations remaining for the further trek is for 15 days.
Second Day : The remaining three people use up 3 days of rations. One person goes back using 2 days of rations for the return trip. The rations remaining for the further trek is for 10 days.
Third Day : The remaining two people use up 2 days of rations. One person goes back using 3 days of rations for the return trip. The rations remaining for the further trek is for 5 days.
Fourth Day : The remaining person uses up one day of rations. He stays overnight. The next day he returns to the coast using 4 days of rations.
Thus, total 4 persons, including Wigan Smith are required

Exactly. So Wigan's ruthlessness didn't save him all that much, and might well cost him recruiting difficulties in the future.
Ah, but the point is Wigan Smith doesn't want to share the booty with any one else, hence his ruthless tactics
ow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! triky
Wigan could do it with only one companion. The two would have 10 rations between them. After 1 1/2 days, they would have used a total of 3 rations, leaving 7 rations. Wigan could then strangle or otherwise eliminate his companion. Since the teaser does not state that the return trip could not be the same route taken to Kebabylon, Wigan could take 5 rations, leaving 2 behind. The 5 rations would be enough to complete the remaining 2 1/2 day journey to Kebabylon and return to his cache. He would then have 2 rations for the remaining 1 1/2 day return trip to the coast.
To cnmne, I do not agree with your answer.
If he strangled his companion, then he will have to carry 7 rations, but it says that he can only do 5.
