Brain Teasers
Sweaty Chef
A man went into the "Sweaty Chef" Kebab shop and ate a meal costing 105 Madadian Wonks (local currency Madadian Wonk=MW), giving the owner, Mr Juan, a 500 MW note. He kept the change, came back a few minutes later and ordered some kebabs for his girlfriend. He gave the cashier a 100MW note and received 20MW in change.
The following day the bank told Mr Juan that both the 500MW and the 100MW notes were counterfeit.
How much money did the"Sweaty Chef" lose? Ignore the profit of the takeaway.

Answer
600 Madadian WonksSince the man's entire payment for each visit was counterfeit, everything he took - food and change - constituted a loss to the "Sweaty Chef".
On the man's first visit, the restaurant lost the 105MW meal that the man ate and the 395MW that the cashier gave the man in change. Thus, 500MW.
On the man's second visit, the restaurant lost the 80MW meal that the man's girlfriend took, and the 20MW that the cashier gave the man in change. Thus, 100MW.
In all, the "Sweaty Chef" lost 600MW in notes and food (or 415MW in just notes, but they should also count the value of the food lost).

my fan base just grows and grows
I thought it was okay. I initially was only going for the value of the change, but then I realized the value of food needed to be considered a loss. Good job.
Braingle's for smart people parappa? Presumably thats why you never come on anymore then. btw good teaser I thought mad
I didn't think of it in terms of food and change. I just figured, all payments were made properly, so aside from profits, the balance is 0 MW. However, the entire 500MW note is lost due to its unauthenticity. But...I assumed that there was a great chance that the 100MW note give for the second purchase was PART OF the change that the customer received from the first transaction. And if that is the case, he only lost the 500MW, because he already had 100 false MW to begin with, and ended with them again, that note having no effect between the beginning status and the end status. Yes, the "Sweaty Chef" did most likely "lose" those 100MW when he receieved that 100MW note the first time (whenever that might have been), but that was not in this transaction. So the way I see it:
First transaction he actually loses only 400, because the amounts exchanged (whether authentic or not) are proper -- i.e., zero balance. But out of those exchanges, he loses 500 due to receiving a fake 500, but also unloads a FALSE 100 which he has been credited with by the customer. This is a -500, and a +100, balance of -400.
Second transaction, he loses 100 by receiving the fake 100 back. Total for both transactions: -500.
But that is all assuming that the fake 100 was part of the change. It was not specified one way or the other in the teaser.

It doesn't matter whether or not the fake 100MW note was part of the change. The cost of the food, also, is a red herring. The end result is that the owner possessed two fake notes supposedly worth 600MW but actually worth nothing.
