Movie Reviews - What Did You Watch
Post a short review of a recent movie you've seen - old or new - and share your recommendations.
Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
This newest installment in the Hunger Games film series is a prequel. For anyone who has read the book, this is a very faithful adaptation. Some details are obviously left out and the time frame of the book is compressed, but otherwise it hits all the major plot points. My one criticism is that because things have to be left out, you don't get to know the other tributes and mentors enough to care when they are on screen - your focus is on Snow and his tribute, Lucy Gray.
Costumes and settings are really good and give this film its own unique feel. Even the Capital, known in the future for its wild fashions and awe-inspiring buildings, has a post-WW2 feel. The Arena the tributes compete in is literally a crumbling arena once used for sports.
The actors give great performances, especially the veterans Viola Davis and Peter Dinklage. Tom Blyth plays young Snow, and he is able to convey with his eyes what is going on in Snow's head.
If you liked the original films, you will like this one.
