BRANGLE FAMILY ROOM - 49
Down under it was night time, getting ready for bed. The TV was on.
We had vision and voice over about the planes crashing into the buildings. As we were going though our bedtime routine, glancing at the Tv we thought it was a movie! When we realized it was real we were mesmerized by the vision and didn't get any sleep that night as we watched and listened to all the updates...
The next day at work, all my friends said they had the same experience!

Just thought I would put this out there. For the last several years my lovely wife, myself, my family and several members of our church have been voluntering and helping refugees from Africa acclimate to living in the US. Helping them find jobs, apartments, learning to drive, getting English lessons, and so on, can be very hard, but very rewarding. I bring this up now because one family we work with is a young mother of three children, the oldest one, Gloria will be turning 11 this year. She was diagnosed 2 and 1/2 years ago with stage 4 kidney failure and we have been struggling with them this entire time with multiple trips to the hospital, blood tests and so on. It has been very hard on them, but the great news is that, after finally getting on the kidney transplant list last year they found a live donor for her and on 11/20/18 she will get her new kidney, two days before she turns 11!!! The other reason I am putting this out there is that her mother has to take off work for several weeks to help Gloria recover and needs financial help. We have partnered with COTA (Children's Organ Transplant Association) in this effort as they do not charge any fees and will help cover all expenses out of the donations received on Gloria's behalf. This is better than GoFundMe as they are a 501c3 charity and all money donated goes to Gloria's expenses as they get their funding from other donations. Please consider even a $10 donation as we try to raise $30k to cover current expenses, but also to have a fund for her continuing care and the likelihood that she will need another transplant as she gets older. The place to see her picture and learn more is www.COTAforGloriaB.com. Thank you.

Family room has been quiet since November... guess that was one rough Thanksgiving!
I know it was for me Deb

That's how it goes sometimes. I had a rougher Christmas, but mostly because I got sick a few days before and that threw off the whole holiday for me. But hey, now it's almost February.
Technically, for Braingle it is now February! I have 25 minutes to go still. Some things will never change, some things have to change. Days are a bit longer now, and I don't mean because we are moving towards more sun in the sky at night... my personal winter storm is starting to rise. I guess every so often, I think I don't want it to end... and then I realize it has to. Sorry Deb you got sick at Christmas time... that would not be good. When I was a kid around 7 or 8, I was really sick on the 4th of July and could not go outside to light those sparklers... it was the worst 4th of July ever to look out at everyone else doing it (we were at my cousins house)... now it seems incidental; but hey, I remember that night anyway!

Thank you Snappy. As I told my kids a couple days ago, there are more good waking hours in the day than bad now... it is the evenings that are the hardest, because there's not as much to do but type some memories down, watch TV or read; the first two just make me think about her at times, reading is hard to concentrate on now too, so I have stayed away from it. Still a bit too cold outside to sit and enjoy the evening skies. Yep, one step at a time!

Randy, Snappy and I are with you as we know what it is to take one step at a time. You are well bless with such good friends here.

KD, being self employed has its benefits for sure. The Path must be really looked at. In 1979, I was newly married and expecting our first child. We decided she would be a stay at home mom (many today do not do this, it almost seems like both spouses have to work to make ends meet), sadly my employer did not provide insurance. It was a no brainer, I had to find work as an Electrician with someone who had benefits. I ended up working for a major newspaper in Los Angeles (no rocket science here to think who this was). At the same time of applying for this job, I applied to get my State Contractor's license. I got the job at the newspaper, and a couple months later got a test date for my license. I took it, and passed the first time. Got my license in July of 1979; but I had a full time job (mostly inside... a real benefit when it rains or is really hot). Having the license, I could have been self employed... but I stayed with this newspaper for over 26 years, using my license only on the side for the week-end. During those 26 years, I chose to transfer to a new plant some 35 miles from my house. After some 20 years there, I ended up being the Supervisor in charge. 5 years later, the plant closed, people used the internet over getting an actual paper, go figure.
For some 12 years, I fell back on my license as an Electrical Contractor. I was now self employed. Not planned, just in the cards. Having a backup plan in life is important. I retired some 2 years ago, and still get calls from my clients of the past 12 years of working. Yes, a slight brag, but I was good at what I did... and I was always honest and reliable. More than one of my clients told me that they could set their watch by when I showed up. If I told them 10 AM, I was there at 10 AM. In 12 years, only one job was held up because the current client kept adding more work because she liked what I did. I did at least call the one I was missing the appointment with... another thing many today do not consider - how others feel when you hire someone who just shows up when they feel like it. Yep, slight lesson your interviewer may not tell you, but if they do... you have a head's up. Be honest and reliable. You may not become self employed, but even if not, your employer will appreciate this too!

My youngest daughter is 12, turning 13 in May and is only in 7th, so may we assume you skipped a grade somewhere along the way?
REASON IN A NUTSHELL:
I stayed 1 extra year of preschool, so I skipped 2nd grade to fit into my age group.
I then skipped 5th to get into Franklin High School, which was terrible so I am at Maxine Hong Kingston now.
So TWO grades, actually.

Wow KD, I'm 1 month younger than you and I'm one grade below you.
