Not in this forum, smatypants. Please visit the Debate forum for that.

The description of these forums says to talk about current events happening around the world. Does this mean current events happening around the world, current events happening around the world in terms of "it happened half-way across the world, in...", or current events happening that the whole world (or at least nation) knows about?

A current event in this forum has to be at least nationwide in your nation, meaning that it affects that many people or it is relevent to that many people.

I have a question. What happens if you write your own forum and didn't know that somebody already wrote about that topic? What would happen?

Threads in this forum are commonly locked for one good reason, that being that this forum is for current events and the discussion of current events. If a news item is a month old or older, it is no longer current.

They are locked by the moderators.

What would probably happen is that your topic would just be deleted. It isn't a bad thing and one deleted topic barely affects your karma, but if it happens make sure to check the next time you post a topic. I don't think it has ever happened before, so you shouldn't worry.

Howdy! I'm wanting to make a topic here about the US election, but I don't want it to turn into a debate. Can I do this or would it be too much trouble for you guys? Just wanted to ask before taking action.

Sure! It's not too much trouble for us at all, in fact trouble is my middle name. There's certainly many aspects of the U.S. election that can be discussed here rather than debated, and also some users may prefer to participate in a discussion about a particular topic rather than a debate on it, so I think a topic on it would be fine.

Hope I helped,

Per the rules of this forum, I have locked several topics this day... call it the end of the year clean up and the fact that almost all of the topics are definately over two months old.
