Unicode Characters

When you are entering a teaser or quiz, you can type double-byte (Unicode) characters, such as:
Λ (capital Greek Lamba)
Σ (capital Greek Sigma)
In case they don't display in this note, I copied the letters above from here.

After the teaser/quiz is accepted, it doesn't show these characters correctly, such as in my Stamp Collecting quiz.
In question 9, I wrote "Greece" (ELLAS) in Greek letters (ΕΛΛΑΣ), but it displays as two characters per letter: ΕΛΛÎ'Σ. I see this in IE, FireFox, and Chrome.
In question 2, I wrote Zürich (Zurich but with the two dots over the u), copied from here. Note that in the URL, it displays the "u" as "% C 3 % B C" (without the spaces) which is the UTF8 representation.

Can the Unicode character display issue be fixed?

It might be as simple as putting the UTF8 header at the top of the page:
. This won't display so I'll space it out:
< ? xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ? >

You might need to "escape" the characters, or "uu-encode"/URLencode them when someone enters a teaser/quiz.

The problem here is that the bad characters are saved in the database, so even with the UTF8 header (which we already had) they would not be displayed correctly. Im not sure where the characters got corrupted when saving, but I fixed it for your brain teaser

There are many quizzes that need a fix.
Search on © and you find 16 quizzes where é should be é. Repeat with questions and answers and there are 220 quizzes that need fixing.
Search on € and you find 1 quiz where â€" should be a long dash –. Repeat with questions and answers and there are 90 quizzes that need fixing.
Search on ¼ and you find 1 quiz where ü should be ü. Repeat with questions/answers and there are 37.
Search on ¶ and you find none, but repeat with questions/answers and you find 36 quizzes where ö should be ö
Search on ³ questions/answers to find 35 quizzes where ó should be ó.

I suggest searching on the "actual" column here to find more:
UTF-8 Debug

Here are some teasers that need the database fix:

Tom Swift Returns From Australia
Video Game Villains
I Am The Very Best
é should be é

There's Money In Music
Three Seconds
0 to 10 Pyramid XIX
Houses on the Street
Vacation Troubles
â€" should be a long dash –

This is a different issue - do a search for "The 7-11 store".
In the search results, the teaser title shows £, but when you look at the teaser, it correctly displays as just £, so I think the teaser results page needs a fix.

There are two quizzes (both mine) that use Greek:

Bible Fish question 11 (question and explanation):
IΧΘΥΣ should be ἰχθύς

Greek Letters in Math and Science has issues in most questions:
1. Ï€ should be π
2. Î" should be Δ
3. Ï should be ρ, λ should be λ

5. Ω should be Ω
the m^2·kg·s^âˆ'3·A^âˆ'2. is quite messed up.
It should be: kg⋅m^2⋅s^−3⋅A^−2
Is this better: kg⋅m^2 / (s^3⋅A^2)

6. μ should be μ
7. Ï should be ρ
8. φ should be φ, Ï€ should be π, and ι should be ι

9. Σ should be Σ,
The word "mathematics" comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthēma)

10. Î should be Π
Uppercase: ΑΒΓΔΕΖΗΘΙΚΛΜΝΞΟΠΡΣΤΥΦΧΨΩ
Lowercase: αβγδεζηθικλμνξοπρστυφχψω

I'll just have to fix these as I notice them. Feel free to submit corrections for them, or let me know and I can fix them too.
