Ask a Quizmaster (cont'd)

Hi Marc,

Thanks for submitting the correction.

My one bit of feedback is that people who write/submit quizzes should have a feature that allows them to alert a quizmaster for corrections after their quiz is posted. It seems odd that I am able to post a quiz, but after I get notifications in comments that a question is not quite right, I don't have the ability to ask it be fixed by submitting for a correction. That should be a future site improvement, IMHO.

Thanks again.

Argh!

Marc, on that same note, can you go back to submit corrections and add the Franklin D. Roosevelt (with the period) option? I think the requested correction only asked for Franklin D Roosevelt (without the period).

So frustrating I can't do this...

Hi cccgirl, this has been fixed and accepts:
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Franklin Roosevelt, Roosevelt, FDR, Franklin D Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt

Once you take some more quizzes or teasers, or submit a few more, you will be able to submit your own corrections.

I got a notification saying a correction had been made to a quiz I'd posted quite some time ago. How do I know what the correction was? When I clicked the notification, it took me to one of my quizzes, but there was nothing flagging anything that I could see.
Thanks!

Clicking on that notification should send you to the "my quizzes" page. If you scroll down, there is a section for quizzes with corrections submitted. Open that quiz and scroll through the questions, it should be obvious which question in the quiz has a correction submitted.

Thank you for your query, however, this is not the appropriate forum for this type of question. That being said, let me assure you that the QMs personal beliefs as they pertain to religion, politics, or other matters do not affect their ability to perform their assigned duties.

First, Quizmasters don't deal with teasers.

Second, I assume you are referring to a teaser that JQPublic submitted but wasn't approved?
We only discuss these teasers with the author.

Does the category the quiz is in effect the Quizmaster it goes to?

E.g. a literature quiz correction will only go to the literature QM.

Only i have posted 6 corrections and some i posted at a later date, came back before the ones i posted first.

Quizmasters are assigned to one (or more) categories, so yes, the category can affect which Quizmaster will see the correction.

There are a few variables that can affect when corrections are processed.
The quiz author has one week to respond to the correction. The Quizmaster can't see the correction until the author responds, or until a week has gone by, whichever occurs first.
A Quizmaster might need a few days to do some research before approving/rejecting a correction, which can also affect which corrections are processed first.

Correct me if I'm wrong but NO quizmaster can see a correction for one week after submission or until the author responds, whichever comes first.

Further, the correction only initially goes to the QMs over that particular category; if the correction goes unprocessed for one week (may be longer) then all QMs are able to see and process it.

I have a question about quizzes but the topic is locked so I can not ask quiz masters.

I have submitted a quiz that I worked very hard on. It was rejected due to punctuation. Not being wrong in information but punctuation. I provided references as to why I did not want to change the punctuation and it was deleted from submission. I corrected everything else, like spelling and periods. I just wondered why so picky? I am the author of the quiz. I provided reference as to why I felt the punctuation was correct and it was deleted. As the author I should be able to "personalize" my quiz the way one would a book or article. I have never submitted a quiz again.

I'm sorry you are disappointed in our review process. We are guided by the Quiz Making Guidelines, or QMG. Some of the info contained therein is a little more flexible, especially if two QMs disagree on how to interpret the quiz info or the guideline, in which case, we will discuss the issue amongst ourselves and possibly contact the author for clarification before proceeding. Other rules are more "etched in stone", like the oxford comma. Without more specifics on the quiz you submitted and the various errors we asked you to correct, I'm afraid I cannot give you a better answer as to why your quiz was ultimately rejected.

I agree with you and the other QMs fully support an author's attempts to personalize his/her own quizzes to better reflect their own personalities. However, this must be done within the structure of the QMG or you will be asked to change it.

A quiz will be rejected on its 3rd resubmission for one of the following reasons:
1) Factual information is incorrect
2) Multiple spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors remain
3) Errors remain that have been previously mentioned and have been either ignored or argued

I hope this offers some clarity.

Longhorn, I have to agree with Hrsemn as to the guidelines the QMs have to follow. Punctuation is an important part of a quiz and we try to approve only quizzes that will not be tagged for corrections by those taking the quizzes. When a quiz does get approved and there are errors of any kind, those errors will be caught and submitted to us for review and approval. Once we approve those corrections, it can (after so many) have an impact on your quiz creator grade which is why we try to catch all needed changes before a quiz is approved.

I sincerely hope that you will create and submit another quiz and do not let one rejected quiz keep you from creating more quizzes. Please remember that you can contact us if you have any questions about your quiz or the corrections we have asked you to make. There is also a place for you to comment back to us on the actual quiz if we have asked you to fix anything.

In this box is where I pointed out that my punctuation was correct by English rules of exceptions....I pointed this out as a refrence and even wrote the law that applies to it. It was commented back to me that it will not be reconsidered and it was deleted.
I thought these quizzes were to be fun and this site was to be fun. The explination given kinda sounds like "nazi" enforcement, not a fun website enforcement.

Thank you for answering.

Longhorn_fan, I am no longer a QM but was for some time and I can tell you from experience that rejecting a quiz the first time is not something that is relished. Multiple rejections are akin to torture, but it is the job of the QM to stick strictly to the guide, without exception. You may see this as "Nazi" like enforcement, but it is the black and white rules by which QMs MUST abide.

I am curious as to what rule was in question. Would you be willing to post an example?

I'm so sorry if our guidelines and review process sucks all the fun out of the quiz making process. The guidelines are an attempt to create a standard for quizzes so as not to publish ones that treat rules haphazardly. You can find many other trivia sites where there is little to know peer revision. The quizzes and the overall look of the site suffer as a result.

Unfortunately, as you have encountered, there are many "hard and fast" grammar/spelling/punctuation rules that have subtle (in some cases MAJOR) regional and cultural variations. Trying to accommodate all of these variations would be nigh impossible. As a result, over time, the QMG have become what they are today. They are still revised from time to time when the users and the QMs find a persistent issue that needs to be addressed with a more "permanent" rule or guideline.

As I stated previously, we do not want to stifle an author's creativity in writing their quiz or shaping it to reflect their own personality. I believe the QMG are GUIDELINES and not RULES for a reason. Many times we bend the rules to accommodate an author's specific style or voice provided it is not far outside the bounds of the QMG or if it is not in clear violation of more "hard and fast" rules stated in the QMG. For example, we will ALWAYS require inclusion of the serial comma when in a list of three or more items. Period. We know there are various arguments for and against this practice, so the decision was made some time ago, to state our preference and stick to it. All things considered, there are very few times we have to be "rigid" in our application of the QMG; there are far more incidents where we can accommodate an author's voice and style.

If you browse old quizzes, you may find various QMG violations, but keep in mind that many items in the QMG came about after several incidents were noticed by the users and the QMs. In kindness to the authors, it may be decided to "grandfather" these older quizzes in, "warts and all" as it might be said. In other cases, it may be deemed necessary to alter ALL quizzes to comply with the revised QMG. This can create a virtual FLOOD of corrections for the QMs, who are already working very hard on the review process for many quizzes, so this decision is made carefully and after much consideration.

This is all the explanation I can offer. If our guidelines and practices still take all the fun out of the process for you, then I can only express regret that we will lose you as a contributor.
