Chapter 3
What a drag. Hour after hour, standing guard outside the armory, where nothing ever happened. José was certain the shipmaster Diego had it in for him. No one else ever got the assignment so regularly. "Because you're the best at it," Diego would say. José knew better. Because no one else deserved this as much, had to be. But why? What had he done to be stuck with such a lowly assignment? José didn't know, but he finally decided he didn't care. José held his breath, listening for the sound of anyone nearby. Hearing none, he began to relax, allowing himself to slouch against the door to the armory. Eventually, he allowed himself to sit down with his back to the door. Finally, he allowed his eyelids to relax a little...
"Mutiny!"
Somehow, José had slept through the ringing of the alarm bell, and even the rising din of combat in the upper decks, but the First Mate's voice tore him awake with an unusual feeling of terror. At last, something to do! Jose readied his musket, and prepared to do battle. After waiting for what seemed like hours, he heard several of the mutineers approaching. The first fell to a well-placed shot, and José drew his sword to face the rest. One of the mutineers charged at him, swinging a sword wildly. José charged to meet him...
And awoke to the scream of one of the irregulars, now cowering on the floor, a bottle of rum laying nearby. To his surprise, José found himself holding his sword to the irregular's neck.
"I'm sorry, sir! I didn't mean to startle you!"
José drew back, collecting himself. The ship was as quiet as ever. José stared down at the terrified irregular in confusion as he sheathed his sword. His concern quickly changed to suspicion.
"What are you doing down here, lad? You're supposed to be working with the others on the upper decks right now... and where did you get that rum?"
The irregular took a deep breath as he stood to his feet. "My apologies. I... fell asleep in the galley, and when I awoke, the others were gone, and this bottle was just sitting alone at a nearby table. I couldn't resist."
Jose reached down and picked up the bottle. It was nearly full. He glanced toward the irregular.
"I'll let this slide this once... whoever you are..."
"Gaius."
"I see." José paused. "Tell you what. I'll keep this rum, and just forget I saw you as long as you go back where you belong immediately."
"Thank you, sir." Gaius turned to leave.
"Oh! And how about you forget I was sleeping down here!" José called after him.
Gaius flashed a smile back. Leaving the guard alone for the moment, he continued smiling to himself. That was too easy. A few minutes later, Gaius crept back. The guard was fast asleep, the bottle of rum half drunk. Snatching the guard's keys, Gaius made his way into the armory. Time to get to work...

"But... shipmaster... I'm not sure."
"Trust me, this is perfectly fine." Diego assured the helmsman. "Truth is, it's rather embarrassing. I didn't have the time to organize my quarters, and Carlos is doing his inspections in just a few minutes. I just need him distracted long enough to finish before I make a fool of myself, and then there's more where that came from." Diego gestured towards the small purse the helmsman was now holding.
"But... what do I tell the First Mate?"
"Make something up." Diego winked. "Just give me a minute to get back to my quarters before you call for him."

"Time for your meal, Captain."
Carlos flashed a cruel grin as Salvador glanced warily at him. The Captain resisted as he often did, but soon swallowed down the food Carlos gave him. As he reached for his bottle of sleeping draught, he heard the helmsman calling him. Frustrated, Carlos left the bottle on the small table near Salvador's bed.
Salvador stared anxiously at the bottle, dreading its contents. To his surprise, someone else grabbed the bottle. Salvador lay confused, listening as a window was opened in the cabin, and he heard the sound of liquid draining from the bottle into the sea. Moments later, the shipmaster Diego entered Salvador's berth, busily draining the contents of a canteen into the bottle. Diego smelled the resulting mixture.
"Still smells and looks like that sleeping draught, but now it's mostly water." Diego whispered in an assuring tone. He glanced sadly at Salvador as he placed the bottle back on the table.
"I wish I could do more, Capitan. I'll be back when I'm able to help you further."
Diego hurried out of the cabin before Salvador could respond. As he heard the door quietly close, the Captain whispered quietly.
"Thank you."

Locking in a safety for snowmonster, for now. Kind of an amusing question to ask when people these days who drive, both young and older, tend to indisputably use GPS if anything at all.
Voting for celtichero because I like pluralities.

My late arrival to the round has put me behind, so for now Ill be useful and join the Celt vote, but will pay attention to other opinions if something sounds better

Votes are accurate up to this point, six announced for celtichero (6/20), but of course might be less. We really should get a majority. Either celtic or aviator i'm thinking.

I hate maps and I hate directions. I have a terrible sense of direction and when learning a new route somewhere, I have to memorize it. GPS's don't help either - they make me nervous.
ha ha - just realized I sound just like the boss. I'm not the boss, but if you want to clear me, that is fine. LOL

I do suppose printed or paper maps are sufficient for those who have a companion to travel with or decent memory...either way, using stars means traveling exclusively at night. At least by that I'd have to side with maps
Also changing my vote to celtichero for hopefully a stronger clearing for this first round

Chapter 4
"All right, ya varmints. Finish up, and get back to work. The sailors will be here soon, and you'll be in their way."
The cook snarled as he stared down at the irregulars who hurriedly finished their meager rations. The corner of his mouth twisted upwards slightly as they filed out of the galley.
"That's it, off with ye, and don't come back till tomorrow!"
The cook returned his attention to the somewhat more appetizing mess he was preparing for the ship's real crew, at first paying no notice to the strange silence that fell on the galley. A creak startled him.
"What's that? Somebody there?"
The cook's grip tightened around the wooden spoon he was holding, and he raised it slowly out of the cooking pot he was attending. The only sound to be heard was the gentle boil of the pot's contents. The air rustled behind him, and he whirled around in time to see the cooking pot begin to topple towards the deck. At once he felt himself pushed forward into the nearly burning mess. A moment later, something struck him on the head.
Percival gasped slightly as Sam withdrew the makeshift club he carried. He felt a gentle hand on his shoulder.
"Don't worry about it, Percy. We only did what we had to, and the cook will be fine."
Sam dipped a finger into the spilled food. He took a lick, spitting it out immediately.
"Besides, why should we let the cook have all the fun with Salvador's men? That was brutal." Sam walked around the fallen cook. He motioned for the others to follow.
"Aye, we only have a few minutes before Gaius raises the alarm. Let's hurry."
Horace's voice seemed to pull Percival along. Percival found himself hurrying to keep up with the others.

"Sleep tight, my Captain."
Carlos gently closed the door to Salvador's cabin, and began to make his way towards the starboard decks. The uneasy silence that filled the air sent a chill up his spine at first, but the feeling quickly faded. As the sunlight slowly began to fade over the horizon, Carlos for the first time felt a little uneasy.
It's time. Any minute now...

"Comfortable?"
José always found it a little difficult to carry a conversation immediately upon waking up. But this time, with the Shipmaster staring down at him, José wondered if he would ever speak again. Diego casually kicked the half-empty rum bottle towards the terrified sailor.
"But please, I didn't come here to be rude," Diego continued. "Would you like to finish it first?"
José babbled deliriously for a few moments before words began to form. "I'm... sorry."
"Not yet." Diego's casual expression changed to one of concern. "Where are your keys, sailor?"
José began to pat himself down in panic, before realizing where Diego was looking. The key ring dangled a few inches above José's head, one of the keys still inside the lock to the armory's door.
"Well then, let us see what your revelry has cost us. On your feet, José." Diego paused a moment as José scrambled to his feet, and immediately struggled to maintain his balance. The two made their way into the armory. José only managed a few steps before he began to lose his balance. Diego reached out to catch him, but froze partway as he glanced about the room. As José fell flat on his face, Diego's face began to pale. He raced down the corridors towards the upper decks, shouting for José to follow him...

Sorry for being a bit late to the round, it must have started soon after I last checked.
Even if I access google maps by computer I always print or copy by hand to use outside when as I generally don't use internet on phone and therefore no GPS.
Paper maps are always easiest because I can mark the map however I want and write other notes as needed. Also, there are still too many things that just aren't even on google maps.

I'm in for the clear of celti - locking in now.

I admit I basically overlooked that "traveling in the dark" phrase...interesting the boss said dark and not night given the first half of that sentence. Maybe it's just a reference to the fact that the boss must stay hidden throughout the game?
I think we have 11 stated for celt now, very nice

Methinks the answer be obvious. If it be dark, there be something between you and the sun. Our dear captain travels on the subway. And since he be used to traveling in the dark, we'll be obliging and let him stay in the brig.
While I be no expert with charts, I can find me way well enough. The Big Dipper be the one constellation I can find, though I do sometimes hunt for Orion's belt.
Edit: Should we organize so that celtichero has two votes and no one else has more than one? Then the Boss could fire only two people maximum.

doom, right now there are enough votes that celtichero will either be cleared by a majority firing of those voting for him or potentially the game will be over.
If there are 11 votes, only one could be the rat, meaning there are 10 true votes for a person.
There are only 18 real votes in the game, so 10 votes means if celtic is the boss, the game is over.
It does look like two mandatory firings right now... but as long no one jumps off the celtic vote, he is cleared by the mere fact that he had over a majority of votes; so the real boss would be silly not to fire who they can. Someone want to jump off the vote now to help us identify the rat?

Oh, so the mod doesn't announce who was the majority candidate. I see.
Before the captain opens fire, I'd like to point out that zonahobo hasn't specifically denied anything, and also misspelled "astrolabe".

The votes be hidden from all, except in th' case that Carlos's rat be a snitch, and finds out for himself.
I will now resume lurking silently.

Thank ye kindly for your explanation.
Ahoy, ye scurvy sea dogs. I have found a loophole in our contract.
"In each round of the game, the employees will cast votes for the Boss. The Boss and the Rat do not vote. The voting deadline will be clearly indicated. If you do not vote by the deadline, you will be instantly fired due to poor work performance."
Since anyone who does not vote will be fired, and the Boss and the Rat do not vote, it logically follows that the Boss and the Rat will both be fired, and thus our victory at the end of the round is assured. To the rum!
