Logic Grid
Use a grid to help you solve the puzzle based on the given logical clues.
With a Logic Grid puzzle, you are given a story that describes a situation. You are then given a series of statements or clues that partially disclose the details of the story. It is your job to use logic to uncover all the hidden details. The way you do this is by using a grid to mark down your answers. This can help you deduce more answers by allowing you to trace connections across rows and columns.
Here is an example of a logic grid brain teaser that can be solved if you think carefully and use a grid to help.
Five customers (Candy, Derek, John, Rose, and Steve), order lunch at a fast food restaurant. They order the following things, not in order: Cheeseburger, Salad, Chicken Strips, Hamburger and Fried Fish. Each customer asked for his or her meal to have extra sauce added to it (catsup, mustard, BBQ sauce, mayo or ranch dressing). Can you figure out who got what and in which order they were standing in line?
Clues:
- The first customer (who wasn't a girl) isn't the one who ordered a salad.
- The salad did not get BBQ sauce on it.
- Candy ate chicken for lunch and wasn't last in line.
- The person who asked for extra catsup had a cheeseburger.
- John did not eat the mustard drenched fish.
- Derek was in the exact middle of the line.
- Steve was in line after the salad eater but before the mayo lover.
Below is an example grid that you could use to help solve this puzzle. The first three clues have been marked in with Xs for connections that are not possible and Os for connections that we have determined. Notice how once we figured out that Candy had Chicken, we could transfer the two Xs from Candy's row (1st and 5th place) into the Chicken column. This is how the grid can be used to help deduce answers. Whenever you place an O, you can transfer any Xs from that row to the column, and vice versa. If a row or column has all Xs except for one empty spot, then that empty spot must be an O.
