Our first optical illusion

Posted by keiaj on Oct 15, 2005

It seems like the dots move from the actual intersection that I look at. Pretty cool!

I love optical illusions thanx for introducing this section and braingle's new design is cool.

Posted by i_am_hated on Oct 15, 2005

This praticular optical illusion has been known to cause seizures. As you dart you rvision from each dot, it flashes, causing many flashes in an attempt to catch the dot you're trying to find. Since I'm Epileptic, could this be removed? Or at least have a warning on it?

Posted by hamburger on Oct 15, 2005

I agree.

I found this one hilarious when it showed up in my inbox one day posed as a joke on the ballots in Florida during the whole Bush demanding a recount fiasco back in the day.

Posted by Celanba on Oct 16, 2005

Whoa! how do they do that?

Posted by laya on Oct 19, 2005

thats coool

Posted by mejoza on Oct 19, 2005

Cool, but several optical illusions do cause seizures (spinning and flashing ones) - perhaps a warning to the epileptics is needed? (not necessarily removed... a child old enough to participate on braingle should be aware of their own tendency to seizures)

very cool! my fav

Posted by kidlet on Oct 22, 2005

This goes on the same principle as staring at a jet flying across the sky. When there is a white trail behind a jet, some times your mind will want to create a line in front of the jet to form a whole line accross the sky. Don't think so? Try it out next time you see a jet!!

Posted by BrownEyes on Oct 23, 2005

This is me after looking at that.

Hey, if u cross you'r ieys, a circle will apear in the midle of the pictur.

Posted by TJrzk on Jan 27, 2006

I'm no opthamologist so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's similar to the US Flag illusion. If you stare at a color for too long, the cones in your retina or the nerves from them get 'tired' of sending that color; they run out of chemicals or neurotransmitters or whatever. When you then look at white, the complementary colors wake up rested and refreshed and transmit their part of the white light (which contains the entire visible spectrum). So, your brain sees the blue part of the white light but those poor orange (red and green?) cones are still too tired to transmit. So your brain only senses the blue behind the stars.

In this illusion, the white fatigues all of your cones so the complement is black. This illusion is designed so that as you move one intersection left, for instance, the intersection you left mostly fills in where the one on the right used to be, increasing its saturation time.

It seems, too, that the fact that you have many fewer cones outside your focal point makes it easier to fatigue the ones farther from where you're looking; maybe there's some load sharing among the cones in the focal point to keep the problem to a minimum where you're looking.

You will notice, if you can keep your gaze perfectly still on one intersection, nothing moves. But when you finally do move, the effect is stronger.

Posted by Fhempen on Jul 06, 2007

choose a spot ( a corner white dot thingy works best) and stare at it for 30 sec. then look at something white or close your eyes. its okay to blink. if you have trouble looking at one spot for very long, imagine disecting molecule after molecule of the white dot and that should help. i love this one!

Posted by ihateclowns109 on Jul 28, 2007

Posted by StreetsDisciple on Jul 01, 2008

one of my favs - this one is great

Posted by Sand_Kirton on Jul 20, 2008

Endlessly playful.
When my eyes lose focus, some of the grey gridlines drop out, creating new, larger black spaces; or many of the dots (white or black) disappear, creating new constellations,
With my eyes crossed, the whole thing goes 3D, really!
Also challenging (but less fun) is holding your gaze on one intersection long enough to keep the black phantoms from flashing -- ever.

Posted by ICUB42 on Sep 16, 2008

Posted by Hans5710 on Mar 12, 2017

bookworm1 u dont need to be so inappropriate. Some of you post thing that should not be on here including: 1)"Old people have half a brain as 20s-30s people." (Insulting people)!!! 2)"YOU ARE A LOSER" (I don't think this kind of stuff should be posted) 3) "CUT THE BULL**** (being vulgar and mean), so I think whoever does this, if you got to much bad karma,and/or deleting user, u deserve it...

Posted by Hans5710 on Mar 12, 2017

If you spent time reading my comment, thks and I hope 🤞 you learnt something from that. Luckily, this is in 2005-2010, so yeah... Thanks a lot, and good luck all of you! ❤️❤️❤️😄😄😄

Posted by Hans5710 on Sep 22, 2017

I just wanna say no one has been using braingle for a VERY long time. so many people's comments are offensive and I don't want braingle to be a place where cyber bullying happens and people get offended. Braingle is a riddle website, not a place to offend people. If people spent time reading this thanks a lot. Good luck to all of you
