Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a question that needs answering. Riddles frequently rhyme, but this is not a requirement.

Three brothers share a family sport:
A non-stop marathon
The oldest one is fat and short
And trudges slowly on
The middle brother's tall and slim
And keeps a steady pace
The youngest runs just like the wind,
Speeding through the race
"He's young in years, we let him run,"
The other brothers say
"'Cause though he's surely number one,
He's second, in a way."

The hands on a clock (hour, minute, and second).

The other brothers say

And I say:

wo0ow (imagine it there)

I love this one *favourites*

Posted by 4demo on Sep 15, 2007

Fun and clever! I love the "pun" using the word "second"! Going into my faves!

Posted by dhanish007 on Oct 05, 2007

For some reason, I found it easy... the non-stop and the second gave it away.

Posted by coolpainter on Oct 05, 2007

I don't know where brothers comes into the logic.

Posted by rehtaeh on Oct 05, 2007

Fantastic, I loved it

Posted by vlerma on Oct 05, 2007

Great job there Cam. Nicely written. More please

Posted by bradon182001 on Oct 05, 2007

Very clever. I didn't get it, but it sure makes sense after seeing the answer.

Posted by 4princesses on Oct 05, 2007

Good job on this one! I got it right and thought it was cleverly written.

Posted by lyndalee830 on Oct 05, 2007

this is one of the best teasers I have read in a long time....good job

Posted by dogg6pound9 on Oct 05, 2007

excellent teaser...i thought he was named after their father which would make him a "second" (commonly known as Jr.) stupid me...keep 'em coming

Posted by emu77alu02 on Oct 05, 2007

Great teaser--I think it is one of the best

Posted by chaskey on Oct 05, 2007

I agree with the above praises. Beautifully done.

Posted by zaya on Oct 05, 2007

Could have been a clever riddle, but there was no explanation of what we're solving so I'm quite disappointed. Where did it say to explain what the 3 brothers represented, versus why the youngest could be considered "second".

Posted by hradilv on Oct 05, 2007

Wow!! Excellent teaser - did you write it yourself? Well done! Thanks!

Posted by scallio on Oct 05, 2007

Excellent teaser! Well written and concise.

I found this one to be rather easy but not so much so as to make it a bore.

Posted by jaydeco on Oct 05, 2007

good one! I didn't figure it out but it became much clearer after I seen the answer! You had me stumped!

Posted by on Oct 05, 2007

How about George W. Bush as the answer. 3 brothers. second to his dad...

Posted by jabdr on Oct 05, 2007

Good teaser, grilled cheese (cam?). The answer came to me in a second. It's nice to get one quicklly, rather than in minutes or hours, or never.

Posted by UptheHill on Oct 05, 2007

Need more coffee, nice one, would have never guessed it though!!

Very good ! I didn't understand the title, Family Sport. But it was a great puzzle, even though I had no clue.

Posted by snownvegas on Oct 05, 2007

Good one!

Posted by nikitafullmoon on Oct 05, 2007

Brilliant teaser!

Posted by wandering_goat on Oct 05, 2007

Great teaser! How can people not understand this? They're brothers because they're all closely related, living in the same area, joined together, etc. The youngest is "second" because he's the second hand.

Posted by romans1_16 on Oct 05, 2007

I had to read it twice, but I got it. It was really fun and it took a bit of thinking so I absolutely loved it! Good job.

Posted by Therulerofthem on Oct 05, 2007

I love it!

Great teaser.

Posted by Seize on Oct 05, 2007

very good...I happened to get this one, but that's not to say it was easy as I am a genius!

Posted by Madelulabelle on Oct 05, 2007

Great one Grilledcheese! You have some of my favorites on the site! Really well written!

Thought it was very clever, seemed very forthright to me...kudos

Posted by mondayschild59 on Oct 12, 2007

That was very good. I liked that one. It took me a few minutes but I got it. Thanks for the teaser.

Beautiful. Simple and, yet, fun. One of the best around. Congratulations!

Posted by MzPink85 on Dec 11, 2007

GREAT TEASER!!! you got me... was no-where near the answer!

Posted by mosca on Jan 10, 2008

really GREAT teaser! Took some thinking, but was not too obscure!

Posted by kodhrawara on Jan 28, 2008

I got it the very "second" I read it

Posted by vg674 on Feb 14, 2008

Great but ambigous.

I couldn't figure out what the question was for a bit.

Posted by chakki on May 21, 2008

its very sportive

Posted by MyLove4Life on May 24, 2008

Brilliant!! I didn't get it but I went D'oh! when I read the answer.

Great job!

Posted by teen_wiz on Jul 25, 2008

Loved it--the rhyme was perfect too.

Posted by Psychic_Master on Dec 05, 2008

Great! That one got me stumped until I read the answer...and even then I had to re-read the teaser. Poor sleep-deprived me. I'm definitely gonna check out your other teasers. Nice one!

Posted by zembobo on Dec 16, 2008

You know why it's hard to find the answer? Because the bloke forgot to ask the question...I'm sorry, did I miss the question? Good rhyme, but the only way I was able to figure out the question...was to look at the answer!!

Posted by GreenApples27 on Mar 10, 2009

That was an awesome riddle Cameron! I didn't understand what it was asking of me though! haha
But when I saw the answer I was like oooh. haha

VERY good.

Posted by Paladin on Mar 16, 2009

Loved it... I got it right off, but I think it was just a fluke that my mind went ehre. Well done!

Posted by drussel3 on Apr 19, 2009

Very good

Posted by elentir on Oct 05, 2010

How are they 'oldest', 'middle' and 'youngest'? Aren't they all the same age? Actually, if you want to get really technical about it, from the beginning of time seconds have been around before hours have; 3599 of them actually.

Posted by gaylewolf on Oct 05, 2010

Terrific puzzle!
I didn't get it, but once I saw the answer I realized how very clever it was!
Thanks for a good one - well done!

Posted by talanpoe on Oct 05, 2010

elentir wrote:
How are they 'oldest', 'middle' and 'youngest'? Aren't they all the same age?
As I recall what I learned about the history of clockmaking, the earliest clocks had only an hour hand. Minute hands came along some centuries later, followed by second hands as a more recent innovation.

Posted by wordmama on Oct 05, 2010

I enjoyed this teaser immensely, especially the getting it part!! The first time I read it, I also thought, "The question's missing!" Next time through, the youngest going fastest but also second led me to the clock and then the other descriptions fell into place! Loved it! Congrats, grilled cheese!

Posted by elentir on Oct 05, 2010

OK, that makes a little more sense then. Thanks Talanpoe!

Posted by sunnybonghits on Oct 05, 2010

ummm.....where's the riddle? this is a poem. i also don't understand why the hands of the clock have different ages? a nice poem, but a terrible riddle.

Posted by ttam007 on Oct 05, 2010

I thought we were guessing the sport, since that was in the title. A question would have really helped, i.e., Who are we?

I like the riddle overall. It was well written and doesn't have a dozen different answers. Though the answer is obvious once you know it, that in my mind is a hallmark of a good riddle.

Posted by precious1026 on Oct 05, 2010

Wandering Goat, explained the idea of this Teaser in such simple terms that this Teaser is quite brilliant and funny. I like Teaser like this one. I didn't get the answer, but its nice to see that so many did get the correct answer. My answer was Way off. I thought he came in second because running like the wind only gives you first place when there is Wind, but without the Wind, as the Air is calm, then he gets second place. So what, I told you I was way off. By the way, the Title "Family Sports" makes the Teaser even more believable. I am Out---->

I did not get it, but I liked it. Clever!

Posted by eighsse on Oct 05, 2013

Loved this one! Great job grilledcheese. A little on the easy side, but that's good. Very well-written, a true poem. Great outside-the-box clues. A lot of thought went into this -- what percentage of teasers on this site can you say that about?

Posted by cutebug on Oct 05, 2013

The last line gave it away. Well written and enjoyable.

//Riddles are little poems or phrases that pose a QUESTION that NEEDS answering. //

This "riddle" would have been better if the question is clear.

Posted by WilliamXu on May 04, 2015

The riddle should have asked us what to identify.

Posted by Babe on Oct 05, 2016

Back in 2013 I was content with it, but his time, like some of the others I did not know what we were supposed to be looking for. Usually the author will say "what is it?" or "who is it? or "what am I?"This time we were given nothing to know which way to go. As a teaser it was very good, except for that!'

Posted by katamaster2 on Oct 05, 2016

What does "family sport" have to do with anything?

Posted by Snowdog on Oct 05, 2016

I love this riddle. It reads so nicely, almost poetically. It's just wonderful.

Posted by Snowdog on Feb 07, 2017

Fabulous. This should be in a published collection: a standard that everyone should read and enjoy. Amazingly good.

Posted by Coolnana on Jul 03, 2017

Didn't get this one at all. I was trying to figure out a sport. It made sense after I read the answer. A very good riddle after it made sense to me.
