The Diamond

Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.

A rich old lady died and left all her money to her grandchildren and her children. At the end of the will she stated that she had one last thing to give away: her precious diamond. She gave a clue to where it might be. She said "it's in a cylinder surrounded by a thousand squares." One grandchild said, "I know where it is," and found it. Where was it?

haha! good one. i never thought of that.

Posted by Piffle on Jul 14, 2002

"that" meaning the answer.

Posted by jasin on Jul 17, 2002

not bad..........I would never guessed the answer

Posted by Dina_2002 on Jul 17, 2002

pretty easy and "know" is spelled that way.

Posted by pix_e_suhst on Jul 24, 2002

I thought it was a kaleidescope... oh well

Posted by SkEwL_gUrl on Jul 26, 2002

I guess tiolet paper has a new use now

Posted by bmotts on Jul 30, 2002

lucky she didn't flush it down the potty

Posted by Flynn on Aug 18, 2002

I got hung up on 'perious'. It wasn't until I read the previous comment that I guess that he meant to write 'precious'. Otherwise its a great puzzle.

Posted by dumbell on Aug 20, 2002

so itcontains a spelling error. big deal it is still a good teaser. I quess the reason sillywilly has no teasers acredited is that they are still pending or rejected. put up or shut up.

Posted by Gouranga on Sep 02, 2002

How big was this roll of tolet paper? I mean it was a good teaser, but 1000 squares? Thats near to 100m of loo roll! The bog roll in qustion had to have been one of those big ones you find in public toilets. A normal roll has less than 300 leaves of paper.

Posted by sarcastic_brat53 on Jan 24, 2003

boy Gouranga, you really know your toilet paper!

Posted by na-iem on Mar 12, 2003

Toilet paper is not square, it's rectangular

Posted by sarcastic_brat53 on Mar 19, 2003

to na-iem: toilet paper can be square. The brand I have folds perfectly in half triangularly.

Posted by amorn01380 on May 03, 2003

Who cares how many squres of paper it has. It was a good teaser. Plus were arguin over bog roll.

Posted by horse_luver on May 18, 2003

Who i their right mind would put a "perious" diamond in a roll of toilet paper?? And also, what roll?? There are tons of rolls of toilet paper. How would they know which one?

Posted by sarcastic_brat53 on May 23, 2003

to horse_lover, they probaly don't have that many rolls of toilet paper, it would take a whole of 30 seconds to look in ten roles if they even had that many.

Posted by Jessicag on Mar 07, 2004

I thought the answer was pantihose as they are a cylinder and the woven parts may make squares, but the toilet roll is much better.

PS to the others, sure there are some inconsistencies in this teaser but you lose the love of life if you let silly things like that bother you so much. perhaps you should go outside and look at something else besides your computer eh?

Posted by BrenBeadSP on Mar 07, 2004

Cute teaser - I enjoyed it, thanks. Spelling mistakes add to the silliness of the whole idea of a teaser. Enjoy the fun of them all.

Posted by O_Wise_One on Mar 07, 2004

I thought it was a baseball diamond, surrounded by a stadium. The squares coulda been the parking spots, although they're more rectangular. Just a thought.

Posted by CLIFF on Aug 04, 2004

Posted by Arlene on Mar 07, 2005

What the heck,it was a cute joke

Posted by phusers on Mar 07, 2005

What kind of big Roll has a thousand Squares?!

Posted by putzz7993 on Mar 07, 2005

I thought it was the chimny There are many posibilities for this riddle. you chose one of the hrder ones to think of either way it was still good keep them coming

Posted by lostatsea on Mar 07, 2005

Never would have thought of a roll of toilet paper, yet it's something we use every day. Humorous answer , opens eyes

Posted by lostatsea on Mar 07, 2005

speeeling messtikes hhhow bout pucuation tooo. To bad we can't all be perfect. The heck with spelling and grammer, it's the humor and enjoyment that coounts. Life is best when we keep it simple, and not nit-pick on everything. Perhaps one should look at one of the requests to submit a comment, '
"PLEAS DO NOT SUGGEST SPELLING OR GRAMMER CORRECTIONS ...", following instructions is obviously not a strong suit for some!!

Posted by annie9698 on Mar 07, 2005

wow, what a great answer!

P.S. my toilet paper is square, and many brands have 1,000 sheets or more! per roll

Posted by Araldite on Mar 07, 2005

Good teaser.

BTW, Scott tissue says right on the label it contains 1000 sheets.

Posted by Casey_P on Mar 07, 2005

i thought it was a good teaser.

How do you know the squares weren't desighns on each sheet.

Posted by morganik on Mar 07, 2005

I like it, goodjob!

Posted by CHUCKLZ on Mar 07, 2005

I thought it was GREAT!!! My answer was I would say a little different...( thought she took it to the grave) made me laught this morning & for that I thank you!!

Posted by gokcgo on Mar 07, 2005

made me laugh especially the grave comment

Posted by dogboy on Mar 07, 2005

i dunno why the heck all people are gripping about the spelling this os great teaser.

PS by the time i saw this all the spelling had been fixed

Posted by LadieLuvBug on Mar 07, 2005

Posted by sakirski on Mar 07, 2005

Good Teaser. I don't care about the spelling.

But this isn't a logic teaser. It is more appropriate for the riddles section.

Posted by freakydoughnut1 on Mar 07, 2005

I loved it

Posted by on Mar 07, 2005

this was a cute one, definitely one to put a smile on your face.

Posted by rac76 on Mar 07, 2005

nice one!...though i was a bit bummed after googling it and finding out it was somewhere else, also. oh, well! me likey muchly

Posted by on Mar 07, 2005

that was totally awsome but i dont think that someone would hide a dimond in a toilet paper roll!! it was still verry clever!!!

Posted by smartie_pants on Mar 07, 2005

omg! that is stupid

Posted by Sarah5225766 on Mar 07, 2005

Great teaser! And guys, i myself didnt see any spelling mistakes, so chill. Who cares if it's spelled right? You understand the meaning! But who puts a precious diamond ring in toilet paper? Who keeps toilet paper around that they dont put in their bathroom to use?

Posted by porky on Mar 07, 2005

i really didn't think it was all that

Posted by saucyangel on Mar 07, 2005

LadieLuvBug, that was hilarious! whoever wrote this teaser: good one!

i have one more comment....that must've been a heck of a BIG diamond if it fit inside a toilet paper tube without falling out!

Posted by ilovpurple on Mar 07, 2005

kool 1 i liked it a lot!!!!

Posted by CowGirl90 on Mar 07, 2005

***Blank Look***
That was the last thing I would have thought of! I was thinking something like a lamp- not a toilet paper roll!

That was pretty clever, tho!

Posted by swanee on Mar 07, 2005

Good one. I thought it was in the lighy socket of the chandelier.

Posted by 100riddles on Mar 07, 2005

pretty good!!

Posted by ultimatehorse on Mar 07, 2005

hrm... interesting (kind of a weird place to put a diamond). I was thinking maybe a tiled floor was the thousand squares....

Posted by Emrys on Mar 07, 2005

Good as a brain teaser, but why would she hide a diamond in a roll of toilet paper, and where?

Posted by tap_dancer on Mar 07, 2005

Never would have thought of that I thought that she had it in her coffin oh well

Posted by tessa on Mar 08, 2005

Cute one. My elderly mom recently moved from her large home of 40+ years into a small granny flat and used empty toilet paper rolls to pack small items which fit snuggly inside. I thought that was an ingenious idea. By the way, LadieLuvBug I REALLY enjoyed your comment and had absolutely no problem reading it . It's amazing what the mind can do even after many, many years of training to do everything a certain way. Spelling - what's that?!

Posted by sweetpeao4o3 on Mar 08, 2005

what was misspelled?

good teaser.

That is so funny the way you spellt everything

Posted by pat56 on Mar 07, 2006

I didn't see any spelling mistakes in the teaser, but I seen a lot of spelling errors in a lot of the post that were complaining about it.I thought this was a fun sight for people to enjoy and have fun so why do so many have to complain about spelling errors.Although I didn't get the answer right I still think it was a good teaser and I don't care about the spelling errors because we all are guilty of that but what's the big deal.I can think of a lot more things to complain about so why can't we just have fun and not fuss over petty things.Good teaser, keep up the good work.

Posted by brainster on Mar 07, 2006

Wow so many comments hung up on one issue! As for me, I thoroughly enjoyed the teaser!

Posted by yesenia8rivera on Mar 07, 2006

Wonderful teaser! Two thumbs up

Posted by yesenia8rivera on Mar 07, 2006

P.S. This is a great site! After a while you tend to ignore the party poopers

Posted by OldChinaHand on Mar 07, 2006

So many people with so many problems, or is it so many people with the same problem...does it really make one feel better about one's self to put down others in a public forum.

The teaser was a teaser no more no less...I was guessing a cut crystal vase which would make the diamond nearly invisible with a little water in it...but a TP roll was cleaver.

Posted by bryan62 on Mar 07, 2006

Not bad. I guessed a salt shaker.

Posted by shawneeo on Mar 07, 2006

Hey! the person above me guessed the same thing I did, and I think we had the best answer! It was in a salt shaker or a container of salt. Salt comes in a cylindrical shaped box and each crystal of salt is a cube. This works better because its in a cylinder, surrounded by squares, and its supported by the salt; whereas in the middle of a roll of TP where does it go? It would have to be stuck to one side of the hollow cylinder or just... I dunno?

Although I agree about people being too picky about spelling errors, it seems that those shouldn't be there anyway; it makes it seem like no one really cares enough to do a simple spell check. But true it does say not to comment on those, I would just wish spelling was corrected before posting a teaser, and, really it usually, almost always is. Thanks, it was a fun teaser!

Posted by nathalia on Mar 07, 2006

cool teaser

Posted by churchlady on Mar 07, 2006

Fun - guessed right away. Keep them coming!!!

Posted by churchlady on Mar 07, 2006

regarding spelling errors - who cares. We are all human and these are supposed to be fun. Lets not pick on our fellow "teasers". Have a great day.

Posted by bradon182001 on Mar 07, 2006

Easy.Didn't take much thought, but we need easy ones now and then.

Posted by kman613 on Mar 07, 2006

that one was tough for me - couldn't get it. Fun trying though - good one

Posted by lmurray on Mar 07, 2006

Posted by KatV on Mar 07, 2006

It's one of those DUH! kind of moments when you read the answer!!! So obvious it was hard! I LOVED it!!!

Posted by paul726 on Mar 07, 2006

It wasn't a bad teaser, though I think it should have been situation rather than logic. If those of you who are troubled by misspellings, as am I, would just submit a correction, you'd improve it for others, and not have to be considered offensive.

Posted by cherokeerose on Mar 07, 2006

I thought this was a very funny teaser. Isn't that really the point to have fun?? Why do people have to criticize. I f you did not like it then just click it off your computer and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Posted by crazymandan on Mar 07, 2006

I thought it was the salt shaker too, though a thousand grains of salt wouldn't cover much diamond! I'd never have guessed TP- pretty tricky.

Posted by annie_hp_fan on Mar 07, 2006

I thought the answer was a coffee can.

Come on folks! So what if there was a spelling error or you've never seen a roll of TP with so many sheets; it was still a fun teaser. And, isn't that why we all come here -- so our brains can have fun?

Cute teaser! Thanks!

Posted by Takenoprisoner on Mar 07, 2006

This was a cute teaser. For those who felt necessary to comment about the spelling, please note it was written in 2002...and the person obviously came back and corrected the spelling once it was pointed out. Lets move on

Posted by vlerma on Mar 07, 2006

Who is to say that these were spelling errors. Some people just have slopy fingers if you get my drift. All in all I enjoyed the comments, hee hee. but I thought the teaser was another groaner - you know the kind that makes you go duhhh! Really cute, and like was said before "i like alot! Keep up the good work and for you great spellers out there, go find a BEE if you are so great!

Posted by iteachkids on Mar 07, 2006

Take note of the dates when comments were made about misspellings. They were made BEFORE the misspelled word was corrected.
There is, however, a process for submitting corrections ... and it is NOT in the comments section.
Are we having fun yet ... ???

Posted by mkidd053 on Mar 07, 2006

My misspelled comment was a poke of fun at the commenters, rather than the author of the teaser. Applause to the author.

Posted by southerngirl13 on Mar 07, 2006

that was pretty dang funny. i wouldn't call it good- after all, it was really stupid, but it was definately funny!!

Posted by beaver on Mar 07, 2006

I didn't have a clue but it was cute

Posted by choptlivva on Mar 07, 2006

I loved this one!! I thought the answer fit perfectly.... a simple cylinder surrounded by a thousand squares... (some brands do say it right on the package!) No one said she used good judgement in where she decided to hide it!! Clever teaser!!!

I do think it belongs in the Situations category though.

Posted by HibsMax on Mar 07, 2006

The toilet paper we buy, normal roll size, has 1000 sheets / roll.

Go here :

and check their products if you're still unsure.

Posted by patpat553 on Mar 07, 2006

Maybe it was the mega roll from Charmin! I didn't see any spelling errors at all. Must of read it later on when it was corrected. Not a great teaser, but it was okay.

Posted by bootscooter58 on Mar 08, 2006

Good morning all -- I loved this teaser. Very cute. It reminded me of when I helped clean out my grandmother's apartment after she passed. We found money and valuables in the strangest places. She seemed to hide things to keep them from the "bad guys" should they ever find a way in. Money in books, jewelry in the food pantry in the bottom of cereal boxes... things were everywhere. it makes this teaser very believeable. (is that spelled right???)

Posted by RRAMMOHAN on Mar 08, 2006

A good teaser. There are a lot of possible answers, as earlier comments show. I too thought it could be a chandelier! Easy teasers there would be aplenty, but those which make you think of different answers are what we need to keep our brains active! I liked this one.

Posted by aangel42 on Mar 11, 2006

Hahaha funny teaser
Hard though
I would've never gotten it
I love those kind of teasers!!!

Posted by bluehawk on Mar 12, 2006

Posted by sftball_rocks13 on Mar 07, 2007

I laughed when I read the answer

I hate it when people critisize a perfectly good teaser, it always seems to happen
It doesn't matter if you think your answer is better, the one on the teaser is never going to change

Posted by cassiemark on Mar 07, 2007

I got it right away! Good one - really liked it.

Posted by phyllisa on Mar 07, 2007

Cute one, I also thought of chandelier.

Posted by enjaytee on Mar 07, 2007

Posted by udoboy on Mar 07, 2007

Posted by patpat553 on Mar 07, 2007

Posted by Pizzazz2u on Mar 07, 2007

Posted by breathesunshine on Mar 07, 2007

My daughter and I are still laughing!
Good one!!!

Posted by speedqueenkmw on Mar 07, 2007

I got it!! I don't get many.

Posted by lucagrella on Mar 07, 2007

I guessed a kaleidoscope, but the real answer was more logical, realistic and fun.

Posted by MagicFingers on Mar 07, 2007

I too had thought baseball diamond, it wasn't exact, but hey, thinking sometimes really hurts..

Posted by frozenrose_885 on Mar 07, 2007

Interesting and very clever. I was hoping for a more interesting answer (since I, of course, couldn't figure it out) but still cool.

Posted by auntiesis on Mar 07, 2007

I was way out in left field with my answer, but as they say, "You can't win them all. But I thought it was kinda cute. My grandkids will like it too. '

Posted by swimWBC on Mar 07, 2007

wow. you guys need to stop caring so much. It was spelt wrong, the punctuation was incorrect, who puts a diamond in a roll of toilet paper? there aren't 1000 squares of toilet paper...etc. WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!it was a fun, quick, teaser. stop thinking so much.

Posted by saleprice on Mar 07, 2007

I got it straight away, so that makes me happy good one!!

Posted by hersheyugget on Mar 07, 2007

isn't it more of a trick? o well it was pretty good

Posted by jjdolphine on Mar 07, 2007

Hahaha! That was a thinker! I don't know why, but when I heard Cylinderical (or however spelt), I thought of a pringles can, and I was thinking that it couldn't be something as silly as that. Guess I was proven worg! Loved it!

Posted by jjdolphine on Mar 07, 2007

For those perfect people & spellers out there, sorry, I guess it was read the word cylinderical and wrong. My bad.

Posted by Harmony_Girl on Mar 07, 2007

What a great teaser! Very hard, I never would have guessed it. Kudos to the author--keep on writing teasers!

Posted by Trishgal on Mar 07, 2007

Very entertaining - all around well written and cute

Posted by LaMoV on Mar 07, 2007

are you kidding me??? TOILET PAPER ROLL?? honestly... thats not even a riddle... thats just....bad. sorry. there are some really good ones and even some okay ones, but that was just whoa... totally scraping the barrel i'm afraid.. keep trying though.
sorry if that was blunt.

Posted by Musikman212 on Mar 07, 2007

Blunt? I would say more like downright rude. Cute teaser, but once I figured out that the diamond was in a roll of toilet paper, I couldn't find where the roll was hidden. Oh well, foiled again.

Posted by shecky444 on Mar 07, 2007

What about a sugar canister? Would that not in a cylinder surrounded by squares? ( cubes really)

Posted by ViaTunisi on Mar 07, 2007

Since a child found the diamond, the first thing I thought of was a kaleidescope. Toilet paper is pretty clever, though.

Posted by jamy400 on Mar 07, 2007

Great one that was funny!!!

Posted by GobyDude on Mar 07, 2007

Sorry but that is just not good. How can you guess TOILET PAPER????? I mean, even thinking logically that is jost stupid.

Posted by sumit on Mar 08, 2007

i didn't like this one!!!

Posted by MelkorDCLXVI on Mar 09, 2007

Posted by Qrystal on Mar 12, 2007

I'm not usually too critical of teasers, especially since I haven't written my own, but I'm disappointed in this one because I consider myself very logical, and I couldn't find any way to use logic to find the answer, not even after seeing the answer. It wouldn't be Trick though, as someone else suggested, because Tricks usually have some explanation that isn't obvious until the answer is given. This doesn't even have that. Maybe this would go in 'Other'...

Posted by tintiniscool on Aug 12, 2007

It's a situation teaser....

And it is so good! I love it!!!

Posted by petey127 on Jan 07, 2008
