Brain Teasers
Scrabble Cheater
Mike and Dave like to play Scrabble. Mike never cheats. He always plays valid words and never plays out of turn. Dave, however, cheats. Sometimes he plays invalid words, but Mike never challenges. Sometimes he makes two plays in one turn. Mike never notices. Today, Mike and Dave have started playing a game. Mike played first. After 7 plays, the board looked like this:
SPUD
PORE
OPEN
TEAT
As usual, Dave has already cheated one time. How has Dave cheated?

Fun! Hours of scrabble with grandma DO payoff!
Jan 20, 2004
Um, I disagree. If "opes" came down onto the S in "spud", and "pores" came down from the P, that would only be two P's, right?
I didn't quite follow why the words completely changed between the two lists, and if the second list is how the board looks, then I agree with Harry.
I don't get why there are two lists? Also, you need to explain how the board can arrive at this situation. Is there "PO" or "UR" at some stage of the game? If not, explain how the words can legitimately be built to this position.
I will address the two questions posed about this teaser.
First, there has been an editing mistake. The puzzle that I submitted had the word TEAK, not TEAT. That first listing should be removed, and the second listing should be moved to where that first listing was.
Concerning the play, the moves are:
SPUD
SPOT
UREA
TEA
OPE/PE
PORE/POPE/DE
DESK/OPES/TEAK

rowsdower... i play scrabble with my grandma too!!
Good one, mistakes notwithstanding. Anyone of two blank tiles could be the third P though.
Word of advice to cnmne... Use the message boards so we editors can send you a private message regarding any potential teaser changes that may be needed. According to another editor, the word OPES does not exist (OPE apparently does, however). I tried sending you a private message to ask if you wanted the teaser changed but was unable to do so because you don't use the message boards. We had to make a judgement call and decided to update the teaser. Sorry if this version isn't to your liking.
I still like it. With the correction now all the words are accurate. Good job.
Another way to arrive at this configuration is OPEN . POPE . DENT . UREA + PUD + ORE + EAT . SPOT + SPUD + PORE + TEAT. Nice teaser, by the way.. I also used to play scrabble with my grandma!
SPUD
PORE
OPEN
TEAT
I came up with it like this:
POT
SPOT
TEAT
DENT
SPUD
UREA (RE, EN)
POPE
PORE
OPEN
TEAT
I came up with it like this:
POT
SPOT
TEAT
DENT
SPUD
UREA (RE, EN)
POPE
I cants say I loved this one. But it wasnt bad either.
