Brain Teasers
Under Water 2
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
One very cold January morning in northern Ontario, Joe was on his way to take his daily walk down by the lake. He crossed the road quickly to avoid a large truck coming his way. As he reached the snow bank on the other side of the road by the lake he stopped and put his hands to his face as he felt one of his epileptic seizures coming on. The next thing he knew he was under the frozen water and unable to move.
"You were 3 feet under for more than 30 minutes," exclaimed a doctor later that day at the hospital. "But you're just fine and are free to go as soon as you warm up, just remember to take your epilepsy medication."
How is it that after spending more than 30 minutes under, Joe was completely unharmed?

How is it that after spending more than 30 minutes under, Joe was completely unharmed?
Answer
Being January, it was winter in Ontario, Canada. The truck Joe tried to avoid was a snowplow. Joe passed out on the snow bank just as the plow went by, burying him under 3 feet of snow; which is of course frozen water. The driver realized what had happened but by the time he stopped he had gone about 50m and had to figure out where to start digging for Joe. Being very cold out, Joe had dressed the part, having on a ski mask, snow pants and a heavy winter jacket. He put his hands in front of his face, giving him an air pocket and allowing him to be buried for 30 min without serious injury. Some avalanche victims have survived several hours in similar cases.Hide Answer Show Answer

what total trash. OK he wouldnt drown but do you kow how epileptic react wiht fits and seizures? his hands would not stay there and he wold us loads of extra oxygen, he woudl suffocate!! how did this get accepted?
There have been cases where people burried by an avalanche have survived for hours so it is possible.
What? While having an epileptic fit, thrashing around, and using up more oxygen? The main reason for their survival is their immobility, thus reducing the levels of oxygen needed, and they certainly are not ‘completely unharmed’, as in this scenario.
i thought he had fell through a frozen lake but the water level had dropped, leaving ice with air underneath
Not all epileptics have fits. Some simply pass out. And to all the doubter I was once buried by a snow plow as a child. Thus the concept for the teaser. Not for very long mind you but buried none hte less. It was accually funny at the time.
Three meters under? That's some industrial strength snowplow!! Where have you ever seen a snowplow that can throw up ten feet of snow in one pass?? Stick to avalanches if you want to move huge masses of snow in a hurry.
Also, a passing snowplow would not drop the full load on someone on the side of the road - maybe an Alaska-rated snow thrower, but not a plow - sorry, no cigar

Cases have also been recorded where people have fallen into icy water and survived due to suspended animation. They simply stop breathing. There are other answers.
SOMEBODY can't read. It clearly states, "3 FEET". FEET. As in, not meters. As in less than ONE METER.
doggy, at the time that comment was made the teaser said 3 metres.Od1 then submitted it for correction and had it changed.
Certain levels of epilepsy are different. I have gran mal sezuires and basically you just fall to the ground and shack uncontrolablly. Different reactions to different people thou.
Good teaser! Unklemyke is always looking to make other people feel stupid. Who care's about the epilepsy!? The point is, he was under the snow for thirty minutes. The epilepsy is the "red hering" in the story. Get over it.
It never said he had a seizure, he just felt one coming on. It could have been a false alarm. There for, it was a red herring.
At first I thought the guy was somewhere under sea level...
