Brain Teasers
Suicide Jumper
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
A man loses all his money at a Las Vegas casino and decides to end his life. If he were to jump from the second floor, he would fall 20 feet. If he were to jump from the third floor, he would fall 30 feet. Each floor higher would add another 10 feet to the distance of the fall. How many feet would the jumper fall if he jumped from the 20th floor?
Hint
It's bad luck to be superstitious.Answer
190 feet. There are no 13th floors in some hotels, so the 20th floor is actually the 19th.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Not all hotels disclude the thirteenth floor do they? I thought the editors were in some-sort of an agreeance that we would reject this...
The teaser states a Las Vegas casino. Even though there are rare exceptions to having a 13th floor in hotels somewhere in the world, in Las Vegas, there isn't a single casino or hotel with a floor labeled 13th.
That is true
how do you know 13th floor??? there are several buildings in my area that omits 4th. why 13th in hotels. that is very, very odd. and also, what is so important about that particular floor? it could have just said it omitted a floor and that's it.
Enough people in the world view the number 13 as an omen (example: Friday the 13th). In casinos, many people would view being given a room on the 13th floor as bad luck. A casino would slowly lose its customers just for that silly reason.
Oh, and I live in Las Vegas and I work in a casino.
Oh, right, I forgo-- I mean, I knew that! I was just kidding you. Yeah.
Nice one. Cheers !
Well yesterday was Friday the 13th . Spoooooooooooooooooky

Tish, although the editors were unsure about all hotels excluding floor 13, towards the end of the process we checked up on Las Vegas and found not one hotel had a floor 13. We then came to agreement that as this teaser specifically stated that the hotel was in LV it was OK.
An interesting Side fact - as just relabeling the floor would sometimes not be enough for the overly superstitious, alot of buildings add a floor that is usually no more than 2 feet in height, thus actually having a 13th floor, just not usable. The 13th floor is often used for wiring and heating ducts
the hint completely gave it away
What are you guys talking about??? I stayed on the thirteenth floor of the imperial palace when I went to Las Vegas not even two months ago! There was a button for 13 on the elevator, and our room # was 1306! This is another urban myth!
Well, maybe not a myth, since some hotels follow this rule, but you can't say EVERY hotel in Vegas, because it is simply not so. Call the Imperial Palace, if you don't believe me, and ask. Oh, and no, I didn't loose money as a result.
I called the Imperial Palace and YOU ARE RIGHT! I cant believe it. They are the only hotel in Vegas with a 13th floor. They wrecked my teaser!
After I read this, I too began to ask and call around. That is so wierd that my one and only time in Vegas, I ended up at the only hotel with a 13th floor, and stayed on it, hereby missing the whole superstition idea! Strange...anyway, still wicked cool teaser! And thanx for backing me up!
By the way ... who say what kind of building the man jump down from?
way to not read what I JUST SAID.
See, I should have known that, but I forgot. I used to live in an old apartment building that didn't have a 13th floor, because they thought it was bad luck. I am sooo out of practice, I gotta learn how to think all over again!
very good teaser except that it had a odd answer to it that i didn't figure out
i knew it right away! it confused some people, but i thought it was a good puzzle!
hey it is just a puzzle maybe u lotare sulking cuz you got it wrong!?!?!?!? lol just joking
but chill out a bit yeah??? it was suitable cuz eery hotel (except 1) in LV doesnt hav a 13th floor

omg.. i can't believe it! it is so tupid cupid! i ever stayed in a 13th floor hotel!
I agree that the type of building he was contemplating jumping from was not mentioned. I have heard of many hotels that do not have a 13th floor - but what about office buildings, large medical buildings, etc? All in all, it was a good teaser. A little confusing but good.
OMEGA, as I seem to recall from another teaser comment, you mentioned you are under 21. Although I've only been to Vegas once, you should know, that the casino's ARE hotels. They want you to be as close to the 'money grabbers' as possible.
Although I haven't been in very many tall buildings to check out the 13th floor theory, I've heard about it. When I was in Vegas, I was at the Mirrage and we were in one of the top 5 floors. They are all the same I think. Suites. We could see the Volcano right out our window!! It was cool!
RE Teaser-- I got it w/ the clue...it gave it away.

i hadn't the foggiest that there was no 13th floor and i still only got 190 feet.
if you count how many floors there are between 20 and 200 you get 19 (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, 20th) then times it by 10 = 190 (and while i know that my maths must have gone wrong somewhere i figured i had to have it right because 200 couldn't possibly be the right answer). might i also suggest that since getting the answer right depends on your knowledge of the las vegas area, this should have gone in the trivia section?

I liked it!
are casinos always in hotels cuz you didnt state that it was a hotel
I came to your conclusion. I guess we both "Jumped" to the same conclusions?
Right...and we are supposed to know that this was a hotel HOW? This should be in trivia.
I don't get the hint.
He would only fall 180 feet unless he jumped from the 21st floor(THE ROOF OF THE 20TH FLOOR).
i dont get the teaser but hy every1 thinks it's good so it probly is
BTW, some Las vegas hotels replace the 13th floor with an "extra floor" (Like a star, floor zero, etc.)
got it!
Ok. This teaser definetly shouldn't be in the trivia section. It's not only in Vegas! I live in uptown Houston, Texas, and EVERY tall building that I've been to (Even My Apartmet Complex, office buildings, etc.) doesn't have a thirteenth floor. All of these buildings are also fairly new. Older buildings may not follow this new superstitious "rule" (like that one hotel in Vegas you all were talking about). I personally think it's strange that buildings would actually skip that floor. Anyways, got the teaser right. Good Job!
LAME, and likely untrue...
I stayed at the Excapiber and MGM Grand two years in a row, and I distinctly remember I stayed on the thirteenth floor at both stays.
because different numbers are considered bad luck in different cultures, (as I saw on CSI) there are several floor numbers not used depending on the hotel. If I remember correctly there are 4 - 3?, 9, 13 ,20-something (I saw it years ago, and don't remember clearly)
Not true because the teaser says "the 20th floor" not "floor 20" If the teaser said floor twenty I would like it but it says "the 20th floor" so even though it is floor 21 it is still the 20th floor. I will try to correct this.
Yeh, ok, well does anyone care about the fact that the hint gives it away?
Hint basically gives it away, but still fun and interesting
