Two and a Half
Two and a half artists spend two and a half hours painting two and a half models on two and a half canvases. How many artists are necessary to paint twenty-four models on twenty-four canvases in twenty hours?
Answer
Three artists would do the trick. This is because twenty-four artists would paint twenty-four models in two and a half hours. Since the available time increases eight-fold (2.5 * 8 = 20), it is possible to reduce the number of painters by the same number of times (24 / 8 = 3).Hide Answer Show Answer

Why would it take 24 artists to paint 24 canvases in a half hour? You added more canvases. If you have 2.5 artists and 2.5 paintings and it takes 2.5 hours, the artists are averaging 1 painting per hour each. Does this follow the correct logic?
So, 24 artists would take 24 hours to produce 24 paintings. But, we only have 20 hours so we need more than 24 artists. If I am right, how many more artists do we need?
If I am wrong, what's wrong with my logic?

Going by your logic, one artist would only paint one painting and then leave.
OK, I see that. Got me there. But what about the 1 painting per hour? Three painters would produce 60 paintings in 20 hours.
Now, what am I doing wrong?

You can't assume that the artists can paint 1 painting per hour. If you could, one artist would paint one painting and then leave. Then the next one would come and leave after their hour. And then the half-painter (lol) would come and paint a half-painting in a half an hour. However, they have to paint in groups. The average paintings done each hour is actually 1 painting for every 2.5 artists (or the average for revry artist is 0.4 [1/2.5]) Do you understand now?
I got it. My head hurts now.
Thanks.

This might help too. If it takes 10 minutes for 10 birds to eat 10 packets of seeds, how long would it take for 100 birds to eat 100 packets of seeds.
The answer is 10. A bird eats 1 package of seeds in 10 minutes. But they are all eating at once.

Oooh noice! Which is another way of saying oh pooh!
If it's simply a matter of each painter completing a canvas in two-and-one-half hours, the answer is correct. However, if each of the 24 canvasses bears the likenesses of all 24 models with a degree of portraiture rendering them recognizable, the time necessary will be greater than when painting a mere 2 1/2 models. [I'm supposing the half a model is pulling a Veronica Lake and is half hidden.]
