Brain Teasers
Poor BtB
Bad-the-Bunny was asked by teacher to sketch six characters taken from the word shown below. He did five and just sat there looking at the work on his paper with an extremely puzzled expression. Finally, teacher laughed, said, *very good*, and gave him an A. BtB still didn't understand. Sketch the six characters, explain it to BtB, AND give the reason the teacher laughed.
R E B U S
R E B U S
Hint
*character* could refer to an image or description of a person, animal, or object. It could ALSO refer to something peculiar about printing and the alphabet.Answer
BtB sketched the word R E B U S just as he saw it, with the spaces between the letters. The blanks (or spaces) between the letter-characters R,E,B,U, and S are also considered characters, especially in typesetting or digitizing, and on keyboards. So, the word R E B U S, as spaced, actually contains nine characters. BtB, sketching the word, spaced out as he saw it, actually got it right simply by showing the space(s). And BtB's puzzlement also amused Teacher because it showed BtB's facial expression had done it another way (*drew a blank*).Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

i have NO idea what you're talking about.....
Hi, sftbaltwty; thanks for the visit and the comment.
Look at your keyboard. r,e,b,u and s are keyboard characters. The space-bar is also a character. It inserts a blank or a space. It has a byte-value just like the other characters. When text is digitized by a computer any blank or space is treated as just another character although nothing appears on the screen or printout. This is also true of typewriters, typesetting machines, linotypes, etc.
So, the word R E B U S, spaced out so, has the five r,e,b,u, & s characters plus four more blank (space) characters.
BtB did it correctly because he sketched the word R E B U S just as he saw it, including the sixth character (the blank).
So, he *drew* a blank by indicating the spaces between the letter-characters, although he didn't know he had done that.
He further *drew a blank* with the look on his face. *To draw a blank* is a colloquialism (idiomatic expression) for having a vacuous or puzzled look on one's face in response to a question or situation.
Again ... thanks for the visit.

Well, badbunnee you did it again. I, too, was sitting here with a blank look on my face! But wait - does that mean I got it?! Seriously, I had to look at the answer and then it was perfectly clear (or should I say spaced out) to me. Very well done.
Again to katiebeth123:
Once again you have left your mark - one that I am sure many others are becoming not only aware of but also quite tired of. If you are attempting to make others feel and look stupid, then the joke is on YOU. Your remarks are only enabling others to view (as I'm sure they expect to see from you) the continuous remarks and ramblings of a "smart-_ _ _". Please note that three (3) blanks do not equal brain - If you can actually count to 3!!! In the future, please refrain from your continuous obnoxious and offensive use of the English language. Abusive language is totally inappropriate! If you are so dissatisfied and uninspired by this site, why don't you look elsewhere? I do not anticipate that your comments would be missed.

froggy: noted kb123's comment here and teaser # 21681.
I was completely confused about what you were looking for. You were playing on the ambiguity of the word "character", but that also created a vaguity in the instructions. The solution works, but is based on a literal interpretation. It's a nice thought, though. It just needs a bit better delivery.
