Brain Teasers
Tire Changing Dilemma
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A local service man left his office and drove 75 miles to a customer's location planning to replace a set of four front tires. Upon arrival he discovered that all his jacks had been stolen from the back of his truck. After a little thought (and a temper tantrum) he replaced the tires and returned. How was he able to accomplish this since he had no jack with which to raise the truck?
Hint
What kind of vehicle could require four front tires?Answer
The truck he was to work on was a Lift Truck (forklift). He tilted the mast back, placed blocks under it then tilted it forward, thereby raising the front of the vehicle. No jack needed.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

ok that was stupid to me, cause your supposed 2 make a joke in the brain teaser... that sorta tells the answer. Well at least i think that makes them better.
Jeez, this Melly13 person just doesn't like to work her mind...

All of the fork lifts that I've driven and seen had 2 front tires and 2 back tires! Where do you get 4 front tires from??
Fork lifts do not have four front tires. Nada Nada Nada
At least most do not. If some odd type of fork lift does, that would still be an odd teaser in that how would a typical reader know that?
I thought the answer was he either had a model truck (which he cold hold in his hand) or, if it was a real truck, he used a forklift to raise the truck off the ground
Yeah, I like the model truck idea.
Yea, I thought about the model (or something like that) for awhile, but the story says that the mechanic had to think about it for awhile...why would he think about it if it was a model.
Actually, why would a fork lift mechanic have to think about it...

I didn't catch the four FRONT tires part, so my guess was to take the air out of the opposite corner tire and that might raise the tire enough to remove it. but maybe not. i don't know much about cars. although i do wonder, who would drive 75 miles to change some tires on a forklift?
Actually, there are forklifts that have 2 double tires (makes 4 tires) in the front and only 2 single tires in the back. These forklifts are designed to lift upwards of 6000+ lbs. Of course, if the maximum weight exceeds the listed weight, the back will lift up. I went straight to the horse's mouth for this one. My husband is a Mst Sgt in the ANG and deals with very heavy components. He has driven many of these type forklifts in different countries while on active duty AF. These forklifts are also used in other industries besides the military. Although it may not be common knowledge, forklifts with four front tires do actually exist! Well now, that was my learning experience for today!
Just for clarification...virtually all forklifts with a lifting capacity of over 6000 lbs have a dual drive set up....sorry if it confused you...and as far as driving 75 miles...that part was to confirm that he couldn't just go back to get a jack....althouth the company I work for is Nationwide and as such....we frequently travel much greater distances to change tires...ie..Dallas to Houston
The four tyres need not have been on a single fork-lift truck so the 'situation' remains sound.
To the military folks with experience on dual drive fork lifts...thanks for proving my point. You reference fork lifts that most of us would never see. The ones at Lowes or Home Depot do not have four front tires. That was my point...
Also, my second point still stands as well...why would have the mechanic had to think about it if he was familiar with fork lifts?

wow,
Surely the vehicle he went to service had its own jack? What kind of a vehicle drives around with no jack?
