Inhabited by Micronesian peoples, the islands were sighted by Spanish explorers in the early 16th century and were governed by Spain and Germany until 1920, when they became a Japanese mandate. From 1947 they were part of the U.S. Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, during which time the United States carried out nuclear tests on Enewetak and Bikini atolls. The islands became self-governing in 1979 and attained free association status with the United States in 1986.

Sorry if this one was too tough for you guys, but I'm trying to get harder clues and tougher words. God Luck and enjoy my teasers!!!
Friar, here's the problem. I wouldn't even bother reading the clues from 3 on; here's why. Your instructions say the starting letter A is the answer to clue 1, but clue 2 has 3 letters, so already something's amiss! I didn't even look at the answers b/c I don't want to know them yet in case this puzzle ever gets corrected. Why wasn't this caught? (Or am I the one whose reading comprehension is off?)
