Good one, but kinda hard since I don't play chess lol.

tat is freakin EZ!!! but it'll be hard for those who never see or dunno the words on the chinese chess set... but to tell the truth... chinese chess is soo FUN(eventhou i always lose) hehe
i believe this one should have been reworded and put in trivia
Yeah. I think this should belong in trivia too. It's not exactly a trick question, more like a question you would know the answer to if you have played Chinese Chess before. I was thinking along the lines of 'they're not called pawns'...ah well.
EZ but i play chinese chess
fun though

I did not get it a first I was like NO but then i got it. It was OK little dumb though

Hahaha...ha....ha.....ha?
You don't play chess on a Chinese Chess Board - Chinese use large wooden circles about 2" in diameter that look like draughts/checkers. So really that question didn't make much sense. You could've gone as far as saying a 'snakes and ladders' board, or even a 'monopoly' board.
I didn't get it! oh well. that was trick and it had trivia too! Great job!
um... jazzmusican? I think they don't. Perhaps you're thinking of chinese checkers? Chinese chess uses a rectangular board, just like normal chess. There's just different pieces and rules.
Got me on that one. I was thinking Chinese Checkers, so I thought the answer was no squares OR pawns. Very tricky.
Very educative!
Oh, wait. I completely misunderstood jazzmusician's post. Ignore my comment.
No problems cccc...it is Chinese Chess I was talking about...you have a river in the middle, and many of the pieces have the same movements as International Chess. The exception is that the King cannot leave his castle (protected by his guard) and pawns take opponents vertically, not diagonally (plus a few extra other rules). They use round red and black cirlcles of wood. It is not checkers, but chess. I watch the old guys playing it daily in the back streets of Beijing.
Yes, I'm not very good at it. I played before I came to Canada and I am horrible at it. Especially how the cannons skip a piece to capture, I hate that. It's really quite different from western chess.
interesting
This is a good trivia question to pose at any event. A very entertaining and sharply worded teaser. I have pulled this one several of my friends, who don't know how to play. Thank goodness, I don't play this game well.
That was tooo easy - i play chinese and western chess al least once per day!
there arent any pawns in chess.
chinese**
I didn't even know there was Chinese chess
I agree with kwelchans - thinking chinese CHECKERS
didn't even know there was such thing as chinese chess, oh well learn somethink new evry day!

I was thinking Chinese Checkers as well, and thus said there were not squares. Interesting puzzle!
I can play both kinds, and they're both fun!! Well, but the Chinese one has a lot less pieces BTW.
And instead of black&white with different shapes for different pieces, Chinese ones are usually red and green with no differnce on the shapes of the pieces(although some are bigger than others;like the king)
