Brain Teasers
CrossDigit 4
This teaser is similar to a crossword puzzle, but there is a twist. Instead of words, it uses digits 1-9 and empty (black in crossword puzzles) spaces in a 4 by 4 grid. The grid is arranged as follows:
A1 A2 A3 A4
B1 B2 B3 B4
C1 C2 C3 C4
D1 D2 D3 D4
With the help of the given rules and clues, you have to figure out which box contains which digit.
The rules are:
1: No row or column can have the same digit appearing more than once.
2: 0 (Zero) is not permissible.
3: Empty spaces cannot contain any digits. They are empty.
And the clues are:
1. The empty spaces are B3, C2, C4 and D4.
2. The sum of digits in row A equal 11.
3. The sum of digits in row B equal 22.
4. The sum of digits in row C equal 12.
5. The sum of digits in row D equal 17.
6. The sum of digits in column 1 equal 11.
7. The sum of digits in column 2 equal 18.
8. The sum of digits in column 3 equal 20.
9. The sum of digits in column 4 equal 13.
Now figure out which box contains which digit and do not forget the rules.

I had a blast figuring this one out! But I don't recommend the use of a handy paper towel to write on... some of the squares got a bit thin from erasing!

While I appreciate the math, this is just a puzzle. It presents little cause for novel thought, especially in this fourth rendition. When does the rule against repetition apply?
stil, u seem to have something against my teasers and I cudn't understand this comment of urs. What exactly were u trying to say?
dishu- That last grumble was not intended for you. It seems the editors do not enforce the rule against duplication with an even hand. Many people would see this pair of math submissions as duplicate in form. Except for the sums and the location of the blanks, one is a copy of the other.
The other issue is one of interpretation. If your number puzzles truly fit the definition of brain teaser held by most USAmerican audiences, crossword puzzles would also belong in this site's listings.
Except for the matter of presentation (I continue to argue for-
Without using the same digit twice in the same column or the same row, replace the X's in the pattern below with digits 1-9 so the sums for the rows of digits, top to bottom, are 11, 22, 12, and 17, and so the sums for the columns, left to right, are 11, 18, 20, and 13.

Stil as for using Zeroes or X's, I tried submitting these teasers with Zeroes filled in but they got rejected as they had some spacing issues. u see with zeroes filled in instead of blanks, made the grid layout browser setting sensitive, which means it will appear different on different browsers, so I had to revert back to blanks instead.
As for Cross Word Puzzles, they do classify as brain teasers on the site. i have myself seen some mini cross word puzzles on the site, and infact, I got the idea for my crossdigit teasers from that only.
