Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Now it came to pass that long ago, as Guan Zhong accompanied Lord Huan of the Qi Kingdom in attacking the walled city of Guzhu, that spring had passed and winter returned, that now they became lost on the wrong road going home.
The victorious Lord Huan, now without his staff of wise advisors in all matters, pondered the fate of lost warriors returning home from war to wander about aimlessly in a distant land far from home.
"Fear not, Lord Huan. Though your wise advisors are not with us, and it is just our horses, thee and me, and I know not the way home and there is no one else around we can ask or trust, yet there is a wisdom we can use to find the way home."
What wisdom did they use to successfully find their way home?

Hint
No books, maps, GPS, wives, stars or outside help of any kind was used or needed by Guan Zhong and Lord Huan to find their way home thousands of years ago.Answer
Guan Zhong said: "We can use the wisdom of an old horse. Release the old horses and follow them, and thereby reach the right road home." It worked. Horses have a well-developed homing instinct that has helped save many a lost rider.Old Horse Knows The Way, A Chinese idiom from the "Spring and Autumn Annals" Discourse on "Ling Shang", by Han Fei Zi.

Oh darn... I was sure it was to be the stars. Interesting that a horse can be like a dog and find the way back. Learned something new today.
Thanks!
Thanks!
Wow... I never knew that horses could do that. I thought only dogs could do that. Thats intereting.
Can't cats do that too? Not sure, but just wondering...
thats so cool i was also thinking stars , buut i guesse that a horse would work to
THATS SO COOL! i have come to the stage that wen i see a teaser by OldChinaHand, i must check it out
While i do like the teaser, it is not totally acurate. Horse are creatures of habit, that can find their way home reliably in familiar territory.
In unfamiliar territory they are not always so lucky. Same with dogs and cats.
Yes, every once in a while, some animal is lost hundreds of miles away, and somehow finds its way home. My guess is that by pure luck (or perhaps seeing the way their owners went) they start out in the right direction, and they are lucky enough to eventually find familiar surroundings. The fact that so many animals, including horses, get lost fairly close to home seems to prove my point.
I could be wrong!
