Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
It was a grey miserable evening. A truck driver had his truck loaded with dry sand, ready for his first delivery in the morning. He filled his tank with diesel and checked his oil and water. He went to the weighbridge and checked its weight. It weighed in at 44 tonnes, the maximum weight he was allowed to carry.
Imagine his surprise when he was pulled over the next day by the police and given a fine for being overweight.
Nobody added anything to his truck as it was locked away in a secure compound.
How was his truck overweight, despite being OK the night before?

Answer
It rained hard during the night, causing the dry sand to become wet, and thus over the vehicle's maximum weight.Hide Answer Show Answer

It's good, but has some glitches. For example: trucks usually have a roof, so water would not get in in the first place
Nice try, though

Not a truck hauling sand, irar! It would have been a dump truck which has no top. Even if there was a tarp over it, it could have leaked.
I think it was a good teaser. Easy, but still good!

just one question irar1792, how often do you drive a 40tonne truck load of sand?
I rest my case (being as I drive one every day!)
I rest my case (being as I drive one every day!)
So has that scenario happened to YOU, dutchy?
Luckily not - well not stopped by the police, but I'm sure I've been heavier than I was the night before
i didnt like it...
the "dry sand" gave it away
sorry for double post but i forgot to say, good teaser. TYvm
A Fantastic teaser! It made everyone aware of the load and the conditions! The teaser is made for fun, to try to figure the answer, for the given situation. If you disagree with the given answer, say so.....but don't be judge, jury, and executioner on it. Keep up the good work.
Good job - altho I was 1/2 right. Figured grey night meant too much moisture absorbed by sand - didn't consider rain. silly me
love it
Really good teaser. I thought the answer was the truck had been weighed in with a different driver/no-one and the driver weighed a few tonne (yes, i know this is imposible (you never know though ))
This is incorrect, you stated nothing was added to the truck... The rain was, in your answer

It actually says "Nobody added anything to his truck" - Try reading it properly before posting comments - thanks
Good teaser! Even if the driver had put a tarp over the sand, rain water could leak in and make the load heavier!
wtf is a tonne? some gay british measurement?
....and you don't think that's a little rude?
It is a metric mesurement of weight, not to be confused with an imperial ton.
