Brain Teasers
Hyp-hens III
Newspapers sometimes hyphenate words in the wrong place with humorous results. Even placed correctly, some hyphens can twist the meaning of a sentence.
Each of the sentences below has a missing hyphenated word. The numbers in parentheses give the length of the hyphenated word parts. See if you can figure them out!
For example:
The mime had to permanently retire after he was accused of (4-8).
The answer is "mans-laughter"; the sentence makes sense with either "manslaughter" or "man's laughter".
1. I have a bug phobia, but my college roommate said winter was the (4-3) season.
2. You should have heard the (3-4) when I tripped and fell on the dog.
3. I like hearing the story of Jack and the giant, but I don't understand the part when the (5-4) is chopped.
4. After the operation, the (3-3) was only half the man he used to be.
