Latin: ad- to/from
Wow, I got it with ease.
Great puzzle!
Well... it wasn't easy for me! I took the riddle too seriously, I guess. The first line, "One syllable an amphibian I vow." was confusing to MOI, because at the end it says "I vow", and since it's a riddle, I thought there must be a reason for using the word "vow"... like "vowel"... get it?
Also, since "vow" didn't rhyme with any other lines, and since the entire riddle was NOT written in an "Old Englsih" style where people would say something like, "It's the truth, I vow." I, naturally ( ) assumed that it was a clue. That threw me off, needless to say. And since I don't know Latin except for a tiny smidgin (another Latin word, I think! ), the whole "Englsih, Latin" thing didn't occur to me.
ALLLLLSOOOOO... The first line, I thought (again, *shakes head* ) suggested that the word had more than one syllable, and the first line was about just ONE of the syllables!
I don't know why I read so much more into it than the other six smarty-pants here (kidding!), but, at least I got a brain workout this morning, so thank you for that!

As with Shaneeo, the first line threw me off completely. I thought it meant the first sylable of the answer.
That was a really fun teaser! I like these types of puzzles in the morning, not to hard but still enjoyable!
The first amphibian I thought of was 'frog', so then that led to 'toad'... All in all, excellent! X)

I didn't know the latin, but I was guessing toad from the beginning. I don't know why.
I, too, guessed toad, and got to and ad when I split it. Didn't know what was latin, but my guess was right for a change.
I would have never known...
good
Great toughi. I had no clue, but I think this is the sort of riddle you're supposed to enjoy after the fact.
