Brain Teasers
Stabbed in the Back
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
Two men are sitting in a room facing each other. The first man is facing the only door, and the second man is facing the first man and he has his back to the door.
The clock in the building chimes every hour, and it is 5 minutes before the next chime. The clock is on the wall where both of them can see it.
The first man says to the second man, "When the clock chimes next, someone will come up from behind you and stab you in the back."
The second man, slightly worried, keeps talking to the first man for 5 minutes. Sure enough, the second man gets stabbed in the back when the clock chimes.
The first man had not arranged for or been informed of someone coming in and stabbing the second man. He also had no control over when the clock chimed. He was also incapable of predicting the future.
How was this?

Hint
If you were told you were going to be stabbed from behind right NOW, what would you do?Answer
When the clock chimed, naturally, the second man immediately turned around to see if there was anyone there to stab him. While he was facing the door, the first man ran up behind him and stabbed him.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

Naturally haha
Not funny. This is a family website. Sorry but I'll have to report that comment.
I have reported the comment.
I thought that perhaps the one man stabbed the other in the back figuratively, not literally. As in there was some sort of betrayal that occur ed when the clock chimed.

Thanks Habs, and he actaully stabbed him.
Besides the note that the other man was not told this would happen, I was thinking the one chap was going in for a surgical procedure for his back on the next hour. Which would also make sense why the man about to be stabbed was nervous, but oh well.
Interesting LR. But it was in 5 minutes and they'd have to do the surgical prep for more than 5 minutes before that...
The hint allowed me to get the answer
Clever. One I haven't heard of. Didn't get it, except through the hint!
That's really smart! Only got it through the hint.
Hahaha, I had to use a hint. Wonderfully clever!
