Wow. That was esoteric. However, it made me go search Google to research the answer. Interesting! This is my "new thing I learned today", which my family tends to share over dinner.
Thanks, SD ... for the visit and comment.
"Counting Coup" is - perhaps - a little-known "common" phrase and I was pleasantly surprised when the Eds OK'd it. Normally they would "zap" me or sis (LittleGreenMan) for favoring what they say are OK as phrasal verbs but not "common" enough.
I was familiar with "Counting Coup" from some of my ancestors (I'm part Native American). And I'll never forget their way of explaining it.
"If you sneak into the enemy's camp at night and slit a throat, that's just 'sneaking into the enemy camp and slitting a throat', but if you sneak into the enemy's camp and snip off a pigtail (without awakening him) ... then THAT's a 'coup' ."
And the Brave with the most 'coup' .... (Counting Coup) .... wins !!

This is a comment from BadBunnee02's comments column. Copied here by me because bro BB02 is being 'punished' (Bad HA-HA Karma) for 'annoyance' in calling to attention the decline in Braingle participation. For now, BB02 cannot 'comment'.

I (LGM) might add that bro BB02 is up to his usual sexist monologue. I would like to think that our Native American Squaw-forebearers had their OWN means of "Counting Coup" .......
Like .... sneaking into the enemy's camp at night and ............... XXXXXXXXXXXXX
Interesting possibilities, anyway ....
