Brain Teasers
The Electricity Shop
Gazza went to the electricity shop to get stuff for his new house. He needed 5 items - a stereo, a cooker, a TV, a washing machine and a tumble dryer. Each item was priced exactly to the pound and no two items cost the same. If Gazza had only 349 pounds to spend what is the maximum price of the cheapest item?
Answer
67 pounds - items were priced at 67/68/69/70/71 total 345 pounds as if it were 68/69/70/71/72 the total price would be 350 pounds and Gazza could not afford it!Hide Answer Show Answer

if he had 349 to spend and every thing was priced exactly to the pound, then it is a little different than having said everything is exactly one pound higher than the next. but in any case a good problem and for the total to exactly 349 it would be 66/69/70/71/73 exactly to the pound. meaning no change
How about 1 pound?
1, 2, 3, 4 pounds, and 339 pounds for the most expensive item.

Nice problem. In order to maximise the value of the cheapest item, you need to minimise the more expensive ones.
I had the correct answer but I went about it slightly differently. Dividing 349 by 5 we get 69.7 or thereabouts. The 5 values must be spread around the middle of 69 and 70. Trying 2 above and 3 below gives 67/68/69/70/71 for a total of 345 as stated in the solution. However, trying 3 above and 2 below gives 68/69/70/71/72 for a total of 350.
But, it is not necessary for them all to be 1 pound apart so to spend 1 less dollar the costs are 67/69/70/71/72 for a maximum cheapest cost of 67 pounds and a total spend of exactly 349 pounds. Good Puzzle!
