Telephone Ring
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A detective and his son were in the airport. While his son was watching people go by, the detective, Jim, was watching people make phone calls at a round table filled with telephones, each person at his own tiny booth. He noticed one man kept a phone to his ear with one hand. He held a pencil with the other hand, like he was getting instructions or directions, but hadn't written anything down. A man in a jacket took the phone in the adjoining booth. He took a card out of his pocket that he looked at as he spoke into the telephone. The first man finally wrote something down. The man in the jacket walked away, and the other man suddenly hung up his phone. Then he held it to his ear and began making another call, talking into the phone as he looked down at his notepad.
Jim the detective quietly walked up behind the man on the telephone and looked over his shoulder.
What did he expect to see?

What did he expect to see?
Hint
Jim had a good feeling this man was committing a crime.Answer
He expected to see a phone or credit card number on the pad that would match the number belonging to the man in the jacket. Thieves stand around open phones to listen while people say their card numbers into the phone. Then they use the numbers to make calls or charge things.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer
