Brain Teasers
At What Intervals?
Anderson, working in his garden, looked up and saw his neighbor Brown chopping down a tree 1,100 feet away. Brown struck the tree once every second. How much time elapsed between the two strokes of Brown's axe, as the sound reached Anderson? We all know, of course, that sound travels at the rate of 1,100 feet per second.
Answer
One second. It would take longer for the sound of the woodcutting to begin to reach Anderson, but the time lapses between the strokes would not be affected---they would still be one second apart.Hide Answer Show Answer

This should be in science i think......
I'm not sure how I got it, but I got it! Cool teaser.
Got it right away, and I'm a few fries short of a happy meal too.
because i live in australia and we use metric rather than imperial measurements i had to assume that 1100 feet and 1100 yards were the same measurement - perhaps in future you could use the same terminology to avoid confusing people like me who don't know these things...
I got it right but I'm not sure why. How can he be 1,100 yards away but tthe sounds still reaches the other guy in a second?
i was thinking "maybe he cant even hear it, since its in the trick section" o well
I don't really understand all of the negative feedback. It's a good teaser. It might be a bit easy, but it's still okay. The above criticism is NOT at all constructive.
Personally, I liked the teaser. It was a good trick.

Adding to my above comment, I meant the comment at the top, not the one directly above mine.
Pretty good. I got it and was sure that I missed it. Keep them coming.
How is this a trick? You told us the tree was 1100 feet away, and that the speed of sound is 1100 feet per second. I might be missing something here, but it just seems logical that it would be one second.
UGHHHH... I say send it to the math section.
Fun, easy and entertaining teaser; I got the answer very quickly.
