Brain Teasers
Jewelry Shop Robbery
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
There had just been a robbery at the Wallace Jewelry Shop. It was late at night, freezing cold, but the police happened to be nearby so they arrived only a few minutes after the crime. They knew that no one could have gone far, so they sent out scouts to bring back anyone they found. The scouts brought back three people. The first was a lady who claimed that her car had broken down and she was walking down the street to get help. Examination of this story proved that she was telling the truth about her car. The second one was a drunk, whose bottle of liquor was frozen through. "I was just trying to get some sleep," the drunk slurred and then passed out. The third person was a little old lady who had allegedly gotten lost.
"Gee, this case is tough," one of the junior officers said. "Nope," his superior said. "It's easy as pie."
Who was the thief?

Hint
Think about what can and can't happen to certain things. (Such as alcohol)Answer
The drunk was the thief. Liquor can not freeze. Chemical analysis of his drink showed it to be colored water, and the jewels were found in his coat.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

"The second one was a drunk, whose bottle of liquor was frozen through" that does not make sense. It does not say that HE said the liquor was frozen through. The answer does not relete to the question! Plus, the clue made it sooooooooooooo easy! It was practiclely the answer! Please think of better ones next time and ones that make sense!
If you freeze a bottle of wine upright, the alcohol will sit on top of the frozen wine in a pure form. Very easy puzzle.
pass me the tequila, Sheila
First of all, I got it without the clue, but the clue did give it away, it was practically the answer. And I agree with emilymonkeymaia.
Yup. Got it... Still, why would the "false drunk" couldn't get a real bottle of alcohol ? These thieves can be sooo dumb!

even if you didn't know that liquor doesn't freeze the fact that he was supposedly drunk but the liquid was frozen proves him wrong there because he'd have to drink something to get drunk
Alcohol can freeze; it is just at a lower temperature than water. 80 proof vodka, for example, will freeze at around -27 degrees C (-16.5 degrees F). Maybe it would be helpful to say something like, "It was 10 degrees F outside..."
I knew it was the drunk, very easy
Mystery or science, doesn't seem like a Situation teaser.
Yeah this one is a little bland. For one, liquor DOES freeze, just at a much lower temperature. Generally that would never happen in real weather, so I'll give you that, but the statement is still not true. And second, why does having fake alcohol make him the culprit?
And honestly, even WITHOUT the clue, it was obvious who the thief was. You already confirmed the first lady's alibi, and didn't really say anything about the last lady.

The basic idea is a good one ie the fact that a frozen bottle couldn't be liquor. I think there could have been a better context for it though. This story leaves us with a puzzle: why did the thief mix fake liquor? If that could somehow be fitted into his cunning crime it would be a good puzzle.
