Brain Teasers
A Matched Set
Sgt. Hill is a numerophiliac; he loves numbers. He wants to figure out how many times his digital watch shows the same number in all places (not including seconds). He starts noting this at just after midnight. How many instances like this occur in a 24 hour period?
Hint
Ten-HUT!Answer
3 timesSgt. Hill is in the military, his watch is likely set for military time. The three times are:
11:11
22:22 (10:22)
00:00 (midnight)

Really cute!! Nice to be the first one for a change.Way cool!
oh i thought i had it too until youre hint, didn't think of military time! but very fun!
Surely the answer is only three if using Military times. 11:11, 22:22 and 000. all the other times shown would be preceded with a 0 as in 01:11, 02:22, 03:33, 04:44 and 05:55. Thus only three of the numbers in each example would be the same, not all of them.
No, Mad-Ade, watches will omit the initial zero with the exception of the 00: 00 hour. Some watches will even omit the initial zero in that hour making it 0: 00. My answer is still correct.
your answer clearly states that he uses military time, and military time is always four digits, including a 0 for any times prior midday. Hence them saying such thing as "O six thirty" or "O nine fiftyfive", and digital watches show military time in four digits, that is what makes it military time.
Here are a few reference points if you are unsure.

Hmm, it appears links don't work in comment boxes.
Aaargh! I forgot about midnight.
Mad-Ade, it says he uses military time, but it also says he looks at his watch, which will show 1:11, etc, without the zero. I know this because I keep my watch set on military time.
Military time is always four digits, if it is not four digits, then it is NOT military time. It may be the watch makers version of military time but it is NOT ,military time. Feel free to look it up on any of the links in the earlier comment box.
Okay, so the answer should say that his watch is set to the watchmaker's version of military time, rather than just military time. The spirit of the answer is the same, though. I suppose it would be more accurate to say he has it set on 24-hour time. I'm willing to grant that a true soldier would probably have a watch that shows military time with four digits.
Mad-Ade, while I appreciate your desire to ensure validity. Your excessive negativity and arguementiveness is undesirable. Please refrain from commenting on my teasers now and in the future. I respect your opinion, but this issue has degraded into petty bickering. My sources confirm my answer, and the editors saw no reason to doubt me. If you are that concerned with being "right", please take your issues now and in the future up with the editors.
I already have taken this issue up with the editors, and I will post my comments where ever I wish and about what ever subject i wish as long as there are comment boxes in which to post them and reasons to post for. I am not bickering, i am pointing out an error in your teasers. I have checked numerous sites and sources regaring Military time including the list I PM'd you and each one confirms that Military time is always four digits. If you have credible sources that state other wise I would like to see them.
I have tried to be respectful of you and your opinion, I asked politely that you no longer post on my teasers. You may continue to do whatever you wish on other teasers, but I'd rather you just ignored mine. If you continue to harass me and be beligerent, I fear I will have to take this issue further.
you could have choosen to continue this "conversation" in private in the Private message section, like i tried to when I PM'd you yesterday, you seem to be the one that it making this public.
Feel free to tell who ever you wish, I have already let the editors know.
I would still like to see these sources you speak of.

We may continue in private if you wish.
you could have kept it private after the first time i PM'd you. You are the one who kept it public.
You got me!
Wow... Its soooo fun to see a debate (no offence!)
I may be living dangerously to enter this fray, but I have been associated with the military longer than some people have been alive. I have yet to see a digital watch that shows time in 4 digits when the hour is a single digit. i'm not siding with anyone, but needed to make that comment. BTW, I liked the teaser!
so, how is this a "trick" teaser anyways? i would think it's more of a trivia thing (especially given the debate that has ensued )... just a thought...
um.... sure
I didn't really think a trick question. Stumped me for a bit. But I did get it!
Good teaser... being "x" military, I got it right away... and don't really understand the discussion about what was wrong with it! Keep it up!
Sgt Hill and I were returning home from the bar the night he thought this up and he had his watch to normal time because I have not learned military time yet. I'm his daughter and gave him the watch for his birthday two days two days before he thought this up. So now we have 1:11, 2:22, 3:33, 4:44, 5:55, 6:66 Not thought I'd be funny so five before 60 am. The same five before 60 pm and 11:11 twice the trick I thought was in the teaser. For a total of 12. Now since my dad left the military because he took me in the bar that night and I'm only 10 years old he never has told me what a brig is - or something like that. Now that adds to the puzzle.
Once you said "Sgt." I automatically got it.. Good one
Didn't get it.
Sorry, just to clarify: I liked the teaser, but I didn't get it right.
