Anime-shun
Forrie Agincourt waved to his Aunt, Jen Rahlwitz, across the floor of the old train depot. She wended her way through the crowd to join him near the main counter.
"I bought our tickets already," she said, "so are you prepared for a day of anti-shopping?" This was their family tradition, returning surplus Holiday presents on Epiphany and donating the proceeds to charities.
"You bet. Who did you and Dad pick this year? The Church of the Helping Hand?"
"No, but they'd be a good one. We thought that 'a hand up, not a hand-out' fit the local Rescue Mission a bit better this year." Forrie wrinkled his nose; he didn't like all the proselytizing, a word he'd learned from Auntie Jen at Thanksgiving.
"You don't like them, Forrie?" she inquired politely. He explained.
"You'd rather shun people like that?"
"What does 'shun' mean? Like a politi-shun?"
"Not at all. It means to avoid someone. Some groups have a formal shunning process they use to discipline wayward members. If someone violates a group law, they can sentence him to be shunned. Nobody else in the group will speak to him, notice him, or give him any help."
Forrie thought for a moment. "Yeah, sometimes that happens in school. We used to call it 'cooties'. Now, it's just being avoided."
"Yes, I understand. But you've given me an idea for today's game." Forrie looked interested, but Sarah made him wait until they were seated on the train. She could see the excitement in his eyes, which had nothing to do with the bundles they'd brought along to return.
"Okay, Forrie. If I avoided low-income families, I'd call it 'portion'." He looked puzzled. "Poor-shun."
His eyes lit up. "Oh, I get it. P-O-R-T-I-O-N."
"Right. And if I refused to see 'Gigli' or 'Good Will Hunting', I'd have ...?"
He thought for half a minute before the light bulb went on. "You'd have a serious Affleck-shun! Oh, my sister would *die*!"
How many of the following avoidances can you get before the train pulls into Union Station?
1. Avoidance of valleys and canyons
2. Avoidance of the new pope elected in 2005
3. Avoidance of Bush's second-term Secretary of State
4. Avoidance of calling crows
5. Avoidance of baseball hats
6. Avoidance of trivial issues
7. Avoidance of prison garbage
