OF = oxygen(O)/fluorine(F)
SIPS = silicon(Si)/phosphorus(P)/sulfur(S)
ARK = argon(Ar)/potassium(K)
GAGE = gallium(Ga)/germanium(Ge)
LACE = lanthanum(La)/Cerium(Ce)

What does gage mean?
Clever, I never would have thought of that answer
I think the fact that I am not a native English speaker helped me find the answer more easily that some other people. When I read the title, the word "scientific" made me think of that potential method. I checked using the hint, and that was it.
