Misheard Lyrics (Mondegreens)
Misheard lyrics can sometimes change the whole meaning of a song. Around the world, many song lyrics are misheard each day; some of these lyric misconceptions are just outright hilarious, others can be embarrassing. These mistakes are called mondegreens; they occur when one misunderstands a lyric, or multiple lyrics, of a song. Mondegreens are unintentional lyric misconceptions; purposeful rephrasement is called a parody. Another type of mondegreen is the misheard lyrics of another language. An English-speaker could be listening to an entire song in the Chinese language (for example) and might hear lyrics that sound like English words, and vise versa. For example, the song "Can't Buy Me Love", in Russian, roughly translates to "Throw a crowbar to the old woman". After you've finished taking the quiz, you might want to listen to some of the songs from this quiz and see how the lyrics can be misinterpreted.
