I'm planning a date with my girlfriend. We're going to get in my car and drive. No destination. Just go.
We'll stop off anywhere we decide is interesting enough.
So, my issue here is: what do we do with the time spent on the interstate? When conversation dies out, we're not in the mood to sing or dance along to the music, and strange people in their cars aren't as fun to laugh at, what's left to do?
I'm not looking for travel games like singing 99 bottles of beer on the wall or turning license plate letters into acronyms.
What can a couple do on the road---
Scratch that. What can I do to keep her entertained and not make the entire date a bust due to the journey alone?
Someone? Anyone? Feel free to get creative.

Plan a scavengers hunt for the trip. Have a list of crazy things you have to "find" along the way. I know . . .. probably lame, but it may be fun - and actually work.
Take all sorrow out of life and you take away all richness, and depth, and tenderness. The capacity of sorrow belongs to our grandeur. It is the furnace that melts hearts together in love. In loving memory of my dear friend Guy - take care Goobs . . |

I think the best way is to find conversational topics that you wouldn't typically invest the time in discussing but are fun anyway. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate.
Once my dad and I whittled away the time on a long trip by trying to think of original ideas for Disney movies. It's pretty hard but the results are sometimes hilarious. Stuff like, somebody out there thought to make a movie about talking toys, or cars, or bees, etc. What else could they do?
Questions like that can keep you going for awhile.

play a book on cd. something you've both wanted to read and just havent had the chance.
So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real". |

Watch Before Sunrise for ideas.
Even if it doesn't help, it's still an awesome movie.

Have her make a play list on her ipod (or whatever), when things start to drag ask her about the song you're listening to and why she likes it. I haven't met anyone who doesn't like to talk about themselves.

My suggestion, of course not knowing where you live, or if it would even be possible, to not travel the Interstate. Get off the busy busy highway and drive the by ways. There are so many interesting places and sights that you never see when you are zipping along with the rest of the traffic on the busy interstates. And not meaning to be a stick in the mud with your plans, but with the price of gas now your money may be better spent on a fancy picnic lunch from a deli somewhere and an afternoon in a park somewhere. Then you wouldn't have the concern of a traffic accident, and you could concentrate much better with your date instead of having your mind on driving and her both. Just a thought or two.

You, sir, are an evil devil.
My opinion, is to take a huge map, and to do a quick game before you go. Get her to start a line at your/her house, then draw a line following roads as far as possible. Then you have to try to not go on those roads. Crossing is fine, following on is not. See what happens.
Or, you could get creative.
You know what I mean!
Wait. How old are you guys?

I would suggest that any situation where you're struggling for entertainment probably isn't an ideal date scenario. The "interesting stuff" to miles travelled ratio has to be pretty decent.
Also, I like dolphin's idea. Even if general conversation has dried up little cues and prompts like that can lead to an hour or two of date-worthy entertainment.
And math... I think you're getting "creative" and "procreative" mixed up again.

Just drive. Enjoy the scenery. Enjoy the company. Enjoy TALKING. And enjoy the silence of just being near someone you like (love?) without having to speak.
If you get bored with each other on one car trip, that speaks volumes about whether you should be together at all.

As a backup measure, perhaps you could make a rule to stop every so often, like at least once every 20 (or 15, 30, 42, whatever) minutes or every 10 (or other number of) miles. Hopefully the conversation would last most of the time in-between, but if it's in danger of dying out, you could just stop at a random place and go explore, and hopefully happen upon an interesting discovery that inspires more conversation for the next chunk of the drive.
Or have a disagreement over whether or not you're a good driver. People tend to be touchy about that, at least people I know, and it'll pass the time if nothing else... (I recommend the first idea more.)

... Or buy 32 gallons of vodka and wine.
Then you'd have a good time!

Zongetsu hasn't posted anything since starting this topic! I've loved reading all these posts, but, I hesitate to think on it if zong ain't coming back!
I'll just say, I think that all the "if you have to... then..." statements could be true, or not. Don't get hung up about "We SHOULD be able to entertain each other... If we love each other, we SHOULD never be bored... If we're going to be driving, she will need me to entertain her while I'm driving..." and so on. I'm not saying that some of these things haven't proved true in some cases in retrospect, but, just be honest about your feelings and motives.
Life... can be so many things... how can anyone ever think they are RIGHT? HAhahahahahahaha!!!!! |

You're right, I bet he has left in his car already. Maybe making this topic was all a ploy.
He wanted to use us as peons in his little game. Think about it. Now he's driving with his girlfriend alone, and now Zongy here has a good joke to tell the girl. "Ha ha I fooled a bunch of online people into dedicating their time and brainpower to give me ideas I wasn't going to use!" - then they would laugh about that all throughout the trip!
Don't you see? The very creation of this topic was a conversation piece. We have all been used. Well played, Zongy. Well played.

Oh man. It's kind of like the Matrix, we're all pawns powering conversation, our only purpose to make sure the date goes well. I feel like a fool.

Ha! I love it.
Even though, if it were true, zongy would probably have crashed into a telephone pole by now. You shouldn't be on the internet while you're driving!
Don't take this personally, but you're kind of wasting your time. |

Bwahahahaha!!! All according to plan
It has been a very long time since I've been on. Unfortunately, the drive never happened because we started college and life got in the way. Now we're planning a vacation for this coming August at Universal Studios (I'm going to Hogwarts!). But my hours at work have been getting cut so I'm not sure if I can save up the money for it.
And to answer Mathgeek and Putter's questions: I'm 19, though I was 18 when I asked this question. She was 17 and is now 18.
Thanks everyon for the answers. I plan to do this one day still, and I've gotten a couple of really good, original ideas.
