this is not a pol for who think will win. this is a poll for who you want to win.
I would like "The Help" to win. i though it was well acted and well adapted from the novel.
So after, when he whispers, "You love me. Real or not real?" I tell him, "Real". |

I had to go with Hugo. That film just blew me away.
I'm just an ordinary average guy with nothing to lose. |

THANK you jodie. Everyone is always talking about the Help to me, and all I can think of the offensive stereotypes used in the film.
If you're interested in teaching or learning something, check out the Braingle Academy TB. Request link: http://tinyurl.com/q3zpgmz (still in the BETA stage) |

I haven't seen a single one of these films, but I guess I'd probably go with The Help if anything. I haven't seen it but it looks interesting. Racist, huh? Yeah, sounds legit.

The Help was one of the best movies I saw all year. The point of the movie isn't to be racist, but to show the idiocy of judging people based on those stereotypes. Besides, it's one of the most accurate depictions of the South in the 50's. Nothing racist about it.

^ This is why Braingle needs thumbs-up buttons. ^
Parents are supposed to "protect" their kids, but there's a real distinction between protection and unrealistically keeping children away from reality. - Life_Sucks --- One of my teasers was featured as the Teaser of the Day! :D Sept. 18 2011 :D YAY! |

the help is a movie about a privileged white woman swooping in and saving uneducated black women.i...i don't understand how you think that's a good message to be sending?
there have been many books by black women that unarguably depict the reality of black women in the 50s better than ANY WHITE WOMAN CAN, there are some suggestions in this open statement by the association of black women historians to fans of the help. get back to me when one of those is made into a movie.
also this article, and a comment which i think sums up why it's such a problematic movie:
"My biggest problem is that there is simply no creativity in movies with black casts at all. White people are 12 year old wizards, teens with crushes on vampires and werewolves, fighting blue people, talking fish and toys, and yet the best we get is a movie about the genteel south? Someone please make a movie about two black folks falling in love at a rock concert or a feature film about Storm from X-Men discovering her power, or something, ANYTHING, that goes beyond Black Pain (TM) / White Saviour (TM) movies. Sheesh."

It's obvious that you haven't seen the movie. I'll summarize it the best I can without giving too much away.
Emma Stone plays Eugenia "Skeeter" Phelan, a woman who comes back to her family's plantation to discover that her beloved childhood maid has "quit." When she later discovers that she was really fired for using the indoor plumbing reserved for the "white folks", she set out to learn about the real working conditions of the maids. The book she writes is based off of the stories that the women tell about their experiences. It's not written based off of her observing how they're treated... it's THEIR stories. Not to mention, she includes a passage in the book about stories where Constantine, her maid, was more of a mother to her than her own mother.
THAT was why the book was written in the first place. So people could realize that the servants weren't just "The Help." They raised the kids and basically became parents... they taught them to walk, read, the potty trained them, they did EVERYTHING, and they got none of the credit.
The Help really was one of the best movies I have ever seen. It is fantastic in every way, and it helps us even today learn about how we still aren't as "equal" as we claim.

if black people think it's racist, it's racist. As if there aren't ignorant people or people who miss points in every race. If it's everyone or even a majority and has good reasons, sure it's racist. Otherwise that's just silly. Oh how horrid it's a period piece that shows the conditions of the period it's set in. How ghastly. Can they ban Roots, please?
However, I do agree that it would be nice to have more varied roles for black people and all races and nationalities really. Race should have nothing to do with roles unless it's relevant to the story. Period pieces, unfortunately, often make race and other unfortunate details important, but I like them as pieces of history.

The only movie I saw was the Hepl so I would vote for it. It's not a racist movie, It's a movie about the civl rights movement and how people were racist then. The movie portrayed the opinions of white americans during that period and how african americans were treated then. It's a part of american history and a story that was well told.
