I think the next drop dead date is in December of this year. This is not Camping's date, but rather when the Mayan Calendar is supposed to end. Never mind that the Mayans had a little difficulty with some illegal immigrants a while back and that almost no one believes in that particular religion anymore.
But since Camping makes money with each EoW (end of the world), you can bet that there will be more. And as RGW pointed out, the media will probably air his nonsense. Go ratings!

Thanks for the reminder cab, I had forgotten about the Mayans.

Is that this December? I thought it was in 2012... hence the movie of the same name. I think this is when the planets are supposed to be aligned like they haven't been like for thousands of years.

RGW4 wrote: Is that this December? I thought it was in 2012... Oh, duh, silly me. You're quite right, RGW. It's December something of 2012.
I have a question about the Mayan thing - why do so many people give it credence when they don't know or believe in anything else to do with Mayan history, literature and culture? Any ideas?

December 21, I believe. It's quite silly. Our calendar ends on December 31 every year, but the world hasn't ended yet.

I was listening to some people talk on the radio about this, how the media was unnecessarily giving this guy a soapbox.
They made an interesting point about how everyone is afraid he's the "boy who cried wolf", so people just want to be sure they're listening in case.
But it begs the question: why this lunatic? Probably just because they have a million+ listeners and millions in dollars..
Family Radio had net assets of approximately $122 million in 2007[8] and received $18.3 million in donations in 2009.[9]
Family Radio spent over US$100 million on the information campaign for Camping's 2011 end times prediction, financed by sales and swap of broadcast outlets.[10]
Though I just read an article that they were now begging for donations saying they may go off air soon. I guess the prophet Harold S didn't see that coming.

cab, the Mayan calendar that was created all those many years ago is accurate and amazingly detailed, and it was made without technology, so lots of people think it's cool. It really IS pretty cool, and I'm not doing a good job of describing it. There are endless shows on the History Channel and probably several other TV channels about the Mayan calendar. Here's one link that does a better job than I can do right now!

Harold Camping of the Family Radio network, who predicted the world will end on October 21, has said he is embarrassed the world did not come to an end on October 21 after all. According to KBOI2.com, Harold Camping has expressed his embarrassment that God did not destroy the world on October 21 as he predicted. Whole story here.
May be the world will end now because he is embarrassed.

The Mayan Calendar
Experts are now saying that the Mayans actually never predicted the world to end in 2012.
"We have to be clear about this. There is no prophecy for 2012," said Erik Velasquez, an etchings specialist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). "It's a marketing fallacy."
The National Institute of Anthropological History in Mexico has been trying to quell the barrage of forecasters predicting the apocalypse. "The West's messianic thinking has distorted the world view of ancient civilizations like the Mayans," the institute said in a statement.
In the Mayan calendar, the long calendar count begins in 3,114 BC and is divided into roughly 394-year periods called Baktuns. Mayans held the number 13 sacred and the 13th Baktun ends next year.
Sven Gronemeyer, a researcher of Mayan codes from La Trobe University in Australia, who has been trying to decode the calendar, said the so-called end day reflects a transition from one era to the next in which Bolon Yokte returns.
"Because Bolon Yokte was already present at the day of creation ... it just seemed natural for the Mayan that Bolon Yokte will again be present," he said.
Of the approximately 15,000 registered glyphic texts found in different parts of what was then the Mayan empire, only two mention 2012, the Institute said.
"The Maya did not think about humanity, global warming or predict the poles would fuse together," said Alfonso Ladena, a professor from the Complutense University of Madrid. "We project our worries on them."

I have said this before, I would like you to sit down and make a calendar. Make it for next year. Ok, make it for the year after. Hey, you're on a roll... make it for the year after.
The point is, no matter how willing you are to make calendars for a few years (yet alone a few thousand)... wouldn't YOU stop making them at sometime?
So the Mayans made some calendars... and they did a great job. They would have stopped making them for some year at some time... otherwise they would still be here making calendars - wouldn"t they?
From what HP posted, they must have sat and said... hey, let's just make them to this date, it seems like a good time to make them to. We will all be dead and in our graves, who's going to complain about us stopping at some point!
But... those who want to drink purple fluid will find a way to make it work to their advantage. Ok, you will excuse me, I have to go back down into my bomb shelter; I know some country is about to start the nuclear attack that will end the world.

That is actually a really good point.
It's not like everyone's going to die, depending on what you believe. I'm going to keep the belief that it can happen any day, and just live my life normally.

EMB992 -

that sounds wonderful!
we can even do a new times celebration with a countdown for the end of things, like a new years celebration.
i know i plan to be drunk during the judgement exam, so i have an excuse for setting fire to the judge's gown! WOOHOO
seriously, this is like watching as meteor shower...
we wait and wait and anticipate and plan and even fret if we get distracted a while in case we missed one, and when we finally see a good one, we stay anyway, waiting for a next one, a better one to come along.
i haven't seen my grade from all the other ones recently... so unless i get a report card, i'm not going to move the tassel over.

I'm not so sure about this Dec. 21, 2012, but...
Isaac Newton predicted the world will end in 2060. BEGIN THE COUNTDOWN!
In the meantime, I'm going to a college education, make money, raise a family, work, and do things that normal people do.
What are you looking at? |

Sort of strange position to be in though... because if something big does happen in 2012... you might be done with countdowns anyway!

D'oh! Fell right into that one.
Since we don't have any space travel to escape the "doom" then maybe one of those doomsday scenarios where only a few are left standing. Not enough to sustain the human race, but you're one of the lucky few to live the rest of your life type. Like a super virus or something. Plenty of supplies for the lucky few. But bad when you're surrounded by the gloaters saying it'll happen. Doomed either way!
