## The Object

Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.

Puzzle ID: #11109 Fun: (2.78) Difficulty: (1.89) Category: Situation Submitted By: Christina0213

A small round object sitting on a table slides across very slowly and soon comes to a stop when a person hits it. Then the person changes one thing about the situation, and hits the object again with the same force, and the object goes much farther and faster. It is the same table, the same object, and the same force used in hitting it.

What changed?

The table is an air hockey table. The person turned on the air. This takes away a LOT of friction so the object (an air hockey puck) goes much faster.

Fooled me! hermdawg May 16, 2003 Could the one thing that was changed be the angle of the table so that instead of being a flat surface there is now an incline? jimbo Sep 07, 2003 Interesting. I've never seen or heard of air hockey. The puzzle was kind of impossible for me. I figured changing the angle on the cue in a game of billiards. sweetime Jul 07, 2005 i assumed that friction was removed, but i decided that the person had removed the grip from the bottom of the item, thus allowing it to slide further due to reduced friction. air hockey table works as well.. natureluver Nov 25, 2006 I LUV air hockey myrnacarey Jan 02, 2007 great! ...and easy! doctapeppaman Aug 18, 2011 Why does it come to a stop when the person hits it? eighsse Sep 11, 2013 I thought the round object was a checker, or similar cylindrical piece. The first time he hit it while it was on one of its two faces. Then he set it on its edge so that it would roll far when he hit it.
