Brain Teasers
Duck
Detective Tissue was surveying the scene. A woman, who by many was thought to be eccentric, lay dead in the cave. She kept an animal as a "watchdog" of sorts. Only this animal was, in fact, a duck. She was out to be killed by an unknown man, so she hid in the caves. Not even she knew who was trying to kill her. The duck was well-trained enough to quack if an intruder came nearby, and the thought was, that the sound would echo enough for the woman to hear the duck. The woman was not close enough to the duck to be able to hear it without the echo.
A man was at the crime scene, and he said that he saw someone go inside the cave.
"Well," the man said, "I knew this woman was hiding in these caves. I own these lands, and I allowed her safety. Well, I check up on the duck every now and then, and feed it. I also bring the woman some food, and the duck doesn't quack at me anymore. The woman told me that would happen eventually, and I'm quite proud I'm the only person who is like that besides her. You know, when the duck's echo rings through the walls of the cave, her plan was to escape through the other side. The other side is near a river, and no one can get through it except from within. Special gate I made myself. Anyway, I then realized that the duck's quack doesn't echo. So, I was planning to tell her this, when I see a man walking from within the cave. He was holding a bloody knife, which he dropped when he saw me. He ran away before I could stop him. Poor woman. If only the duck's quack had echoed, she would've had more than enough time to get through the gate."
When Tissue inspected the gate, and found it not to be jammed, he promptly placed the man under arrest. Why?

Answer
A duck's quack DOES echo, despite popular belief that it doesn't. The duck was accustomed to the man, so it didn't quack at him. Therefore, he slipped in without her hearing the duck, and killed her with the knife. His story about the man with the bloody knife, was actually him.Hide Answer Show Answer

That is a tall one next time make thhem short but even though i liked it.
Firstly this is a duplicate of teaser #6046.
Secondly, as Dumbell has quoted, a Duck's quack does echo.

Jimbo: Firstly, this is NOT a duplicate of that teaser. That teaser sports wrong information, while this teaser sports the correct information.
Secondly, check out this site for a scientific study regarding whether or not a duck's quack echoes: http://www.acoustics.salford.ac.uk/acoustics_world/duck/duck.htm

As for the length of the teaser, I make no apology for the length. You could've decided from the get-go to stop reading. This sort of teaser almost required some length, and length was given.
(Ironically, this has been a rather long comment... )

yes, a duck's quack echoes. however, studies have showed that you can't hear it without special devices, since the quack is very minimal and soft.
Hi tissue!
Good one, I must say.
About the length, good misteries are sometimes long.
Anyway, the only thing I don't quite grasp is why the man took all the trouble to got the duck feed and also get a little friendship with the woman, and even build a gate, if after all He just stabbed her? Huumm, unless She knew something the man wanted to know!
Happy to see your teasers in this category!!!

great teaser it was fairly easy but that's ok ok!
Wrong, username. The echo was loud enough for researchers to hear it reverberate against a school wall, without special devices. I'm sure the substances used in whatever experiment you're referring to has changed the results, but in this case, the duck echo is easily heard.
This is my 1st teaser and I chose it because it was labeled "easy". When I first saw the length, I just settled in to enjoy it. I think some of these comment-ers have too much time on their hands! Looking forward to more by you!
really easy!
wow, quite a bit of complaining about a teaser.
clever i just figured any sound echos to some extent in a cave,et if in the context of ur teaser the ducks quack didn't echo, then the only way the guy knew that -was if the duck quacked at him ,because he wasn't a friend et therefore the killer anyway.
That was freakishly easy! AND
Oh! and I forgot. Refering to "jimbo," just because it was common enough to have an echoing duck, that doesn't mean it is a duplicate.
Thank you for that wonderful display of stupidity and ignorance, chelshea.
Jeez, you guys know a lot about ducks!!!

well I liked it! it was easy, but thats not a bad thing, sometime ppl need to stop overthinking stuff
I liked it! Chelsea, this teaser took, what, two minutes to read? It was not a waste of time. If you're going to waste your time writing a comment like that, you might as well also say why you thought it was so horrible.
cool! I thought ducks didn't echo but I thought that was absurd so I believe you, good job!
Since the man had befriended the lady, bringing her and the duck food, I wondered why he hadn't stabbed her long ago. In such a secluded area, just finish her off!
This was a clever teaser and I appreciate the length. I would much rather read a long story that is good than a short one missing all the necessary details for solving.

I am curious as to why the man didn't just stab her in the first place.. as Scallio said, a secluded place and on the man's land gave him a perfect opportunity without befriending the duck. What a goose, to take all that trouble!
but nice, well-written poor duck
