Brain Teasers
A Million-Dollar Ball
Situation
Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.Situation
A ball goes astray. Because of this, a man loses a lot of money. What happened?
Hint
The ball was not the expensive part (i.e. it wasn't made of gold, diamond, crystal, etc.)The money he lost was not his yet.
The ball ended up in a forest.
The ball was found again.
Answer
He was in a golf tournament. His ball went astray into a forest, giving him an extra penalty stroke. If he hadn't gotten this, he would have won the tournament and thus received a significant amount of money.Hide Hint Show Hint Hide Answer Show Answer

The hint helped a lot
It could have been any other sport, but the money lost is lost more directly in golf than in any other sport.
Not Nice
Before looking at the hint I was thinking Roulette
good one.
i thought he was gambling on a baseball game. that works
Lots of answers. Here are a few...
1.) A guy made a $1m bet that his car wouldn't be hit by a ball in the next five seconds
2.) A guy had made a bundle on catching Bonds' 70th home run ball, and had to go back in time to save his sister. After he saved her, the ball bounced off his glove, and went astray, and someone else got it.
3.) Someone was closing a $50m deal with a company, when a ball went astray and killed the CEO he was dealing with.
4.) A guy was selling insurance to people with cars. A ball goes astray, and breaks the car's window. The man had banked on the fact that he would receive money that next week, but didn't have the money to insure the victim. So he lost money there.
5.) Best of all, a woman was closing a deal on a new product. She said it was rock-solid, and could endure any kind of abuse. A ball went astray, hit the product, and it broke =P
How do you guys like my alternatives ?

I thought he was playing billiards and missed the shot or scratched.
Nice use of sport.
I was thinking the same thing as aPlatinum. Nice teaser.
To I_am_the_omega:
This is why it is a 'situation' teaser, it is supposed to be solved by asking yes or no questions, because there are a lot of possible answers with the little information you get.
*roll eyes*
k, im done now.

also about I_am_the_Omega's comment:

I like Omegas alternatives but i thought the #1 thought! I wasn't even thinking about golf
That was good, but pretty easy after the hint. At first, I thought it was some guy making a bet with his friend about a golfer.
I got it!!!!!!!
Without looking at the hint, I assumed he had placed a bet on a team to win a tournament, say soccer tournament, and instead of the soccer ball going into the goal, it went astray, and they lost the tournament, and therefore he lost his money that he had gambled. I think that works.
I guessed baseball, not golf, but with the part about the forest, golf made a lot more sense.
