Phone Booth

Situation puzzles (sometimes called lateral thinking puzzles) are ones where you need to ask lots of yes or no questions to figure out what happened in the situation. These are good puzzles for groups where one person knows the puzzle and answers the questions.

A rich man's son was kidnapped. The ransom note told him to bring a valuable diamond to a phone booth in the middle of a public park. Plainclothes police officers surrounded the park, intending to follow the criminal or his messenger. The rich man arrived at the phone booth and followed instructions but the police were powerless to prevent the diamond from leaving the park and reaching the crafty villain. What did he do?

This is a true story from Taiwan. When the rich man reached the phone booth he found a carrier pigeon in a cage. It had a message attached telling the man to put the diamond in a small bag which was around the pigeon's neck and to release the bird.
When the man did this the police were powerless to follow the bird as it returned across the city to its owner.

Hmmm... yeah that's pretty weird. Don't you think the "smart" villain would've had the sense to ask for like... oh heck, I dunno.. lots of cash?

Err..wait.. yen isn't worth anything.. nvm... lol

Anyways... I thought he just had a sniper rifle trained on the son or something =P

wow, i actually got it! Good one tho. very clever criminal. Too bad the police were not as clever or they could have put a small tracking device on the diamond or bird

It was smart of the criminal! I suppose he's rich now. Anyway, good teaser...I guess the strangest stuff is the truth

I was thinking "put on float & drop it in a drain"

there are others from tv/movies
put it in trash can (hole to subway)
put it in locker (false back in next room)
remote control boat/plane

wow lol that's interesting. but why were the police so stupid? they could have just attached something like a sensor map on the bird so they knew where it was going.

It is too vague to make out that there was a pigeon in the booth saying "Gimme the diamond". Puzzling.

He called the rich man in a phone both so none of what you suggested is applicable..

a possible way to retrieve the crystal would be to give these instructions...
i am the kidnapper and the instructions are

put the diamond on the floor in a pocket size bag that is already in place.. and then leave and stand outside of phone booth, do not look at the phone booth and go home after 20 minutes.. (of course if you did not did what i say, i will kill the son or whatever)

i will send as many of my accomplices as i can (e.g. 20), into that phone booth and only one of them would come out with the diamond in his pocket.. police would not know which one and so would not be able to tail that person..

The first thought that came to mind was the police put a tracker on the pigeon. But then the son would probably get killed. Smart of the criminal. That's why they're called criminal masterminds.
