Brain Teasers
Some Grain, a Goose and a Fox
Trick
Trick brain teasers appear difficult at first, but they have a trick that makes them really easy.Trick
The farmer comes to a river and finds a boat that will only hold two passengers. For obvious reasons, he can't leave the goose alone with the fox, or the goose with the grain. How does he get his cargo safely to the other side in one trip?
Answer
The goose swims and the fox and the grain go in the boat.Hide Answer Show Answer

Alternate answer (more a puzzle answer than a trick, though). This can be solved even if you want to assume that everyone uses the boat, and that the grain takes the place of one passenger... First, he takes the goose across, and leaves it. He then goes back for the fox, and brings it across. When he drops the fox off, he picks up the goose again, and heads back toward the grain. He then swaps the goose for the grain, which he takes over, and leaves with the fox. Finally, he returns for the goose, and the goose was never left alone with either the fox or the grain.
Man, Fox, Grain. Isn't that three passengers?
I agree this has more than one answer also the non traditional, the goose swims, and the actual swap answer that was subbmitted in the comments.
although not a bad teaser, i gave it the worst rating, because i like a little bit of a story to keep me entertained. where was this unknown farmer going to/coming from? why did he have a fox? who's boat did he use? just some things to think about for your next teasers.
man and fox count as passengers, grain is merely cargo
i say plagarism. That teaser isin a book iown.
My solution was given as "if you want to assume that everyone uses the boat, and that the grain takes the place of one passenger"... If the grain doesn't take the place of a passanger, it can be solved even more simply, without having the goose swim, as the man would just keep the grain with him at all times, and take each of the animals across, one at a time.
Thats3 passengers going to the other side at 1 side but good
i agree w/ GTregay, that answer is also accptable, and i said the same thing too. and i do agree w/ the others on most accounts. good try.

that's three passangers, or does the grain only count as a seat, the goose doesn't hardly weigh anything so he could go in the boat as well as the farmer, fox and grain. By the way i have 2 say your on my buddy list, if u want me on your buddy list my name is Jamelia!!!
Jamelia, you are not on the list where it says who has me listed as their buddy so you better try again, but anyway I guess I'll be your buddy

This is about the stupidest version of the fox, sheep, and grain puzzle I have ever read.Try again.
he would leave the fox with the grain, then drop the goose off on the other side, then come back and get the grain bring it to the other side but bring the goose back with him. Then drop off the goose where the fox is but take the fox back to the other side go back and get the goose and come back to where the fox and grain are and that\'s how he would do it!
It\'s was okay for you\'re first teaser
I THINK THIS WAS LIKE SOMETHING I DID IN 2ND GRADE WHEN I WAS IN SPECIAL SMART PPL CLASSES NOW I AM IN 7TH GRADE AND EVEN MY SIS IN 2ND CAN DU THIS !CLASSIC BUT A VERY GUD PUZZLE!I LIKED IT BUT IT WAS REALLY EAZY!
Sorry, I like that you sort of changed the answer around, because it is a trick question. But, also, I don\'t like the way you changed it from the original. That\'s my favorite puzzle and I wouldn\'t change it at all.
^Sorry if that was confusing. I liked that you made it your own, but I wouldn\'t have changed THIS one in particular. I think that\'s a better way to put it.^

This was my solution:
"Bring the grain first, go back, get the fox, go back, get the goose."
Good teaser tho.
"Bring the grain first, go back, get the fox, go back, get the goose."
Good teaser tho.
Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT
I didn't like it
I didn't like it
uhhh rabid.... incase u didnt kno, if u take the grain over 1st then that would leave the goose and the fox together and the fox would eat the goose
if the boat can only hold two passengers, then what happens to the farmer if the fox and the grain are in the boat?
just take grain, then the fox, then the goose, it said it COULD ONLY hold two passengers, that doesn't mean that one person can't ride (just a thought )
ANSWER IS: take the goose across and come back take the fox across but bring the goose back take the grain across and come back then take the goose!
What about the farmer?!
That was so dumb, i did not even get that!
What goose? what Fox? what grain? your puzzler says, "a farmer came to a river" says nothing about the other three - where did they come from anyway? and why do they all want to get across? and who cares, anyway? Yaaaaaawwwnnnn.
hello stupid only two passengers not three learn how to count u moron
Remembered something like this from my father, many years ago. So, I actually got the correct solution. That was nice, good memories and got the answer too. How good is that.? Those others...phooey on 'em
lol.It could be take the goose, go back and take the fox, take the goose back, then the grain... Go back for the goose!
If the goose swims and the fox and the grain go in the boat - where is the farmer? Is he swimming with the goose? If not, is the fox rowing the boat?
I think the farmer should eat the goose, make a coat out of the fox and then make a cake with the grain. That would be the easiest way to transport all of them
that was confusin b/c i was trien to get it so they all went in the boat but i didnt think bout the goose swimmin
OK, I heard it the way that the first commenter said. Or somthing along those lines. I vote to keep the goose out of the water!
AS FAR AS PASSENGERS... Farmer is capt of the boat and the other two (a combo of grain, goose, and fox) are 2 passengers. DUUUUHHHHHHHHH

Is grain alive??? I don't think it would be considered a passenger...
didn't anyone notice the nearby bridge that they all walked across
(who said they used the boat...)
but seriously, i did the whole "solve the puzzle thing" that GTregay did, but mainly 'coz i've seen these puzzles before

Nice version
I had the goose flying
The fox and goose could be considered "passengers" as they are live creatures, the grain could not. You could have used that fact to make it even sneakier!
That is the oldest riddle in the universe.
Does it ever say that the man has grain, a fox, and a goose?
So if the fox and grain were in the boat, what about the farmer himself?
THE OTHER TEASER LIKE THIS ONE (the original) is teaser number 784
Foxes can swim, too.
Wow, relax people. If you are driving a car and you have two passengers how many people are in the car? THREE! It was clearly stated two "passengers"
Nice Teaser

I automatically thought, "They walks across the bridge!" Because it didn't say that there wasn't one. And now that I've read the answer, did the fox row the boat while the farmer swam, or does the farmer not count as a passenger?
They all get in the boat - he is the 'captain', the fox and goose are the two 'passengers', and the grain is cargo. Easy peasy.
You people are all haters! Give him a break. He came up with a different answer to trick ya'll, and worked.
The farmer is not a 'passenger' he rows the boat. The fox and the grain are passengers. Btw, can geese swim?
