Brain Teasers
A Big Hole
How can you cut a hole in a 5"x8" index card large enough for a person to walk through?
Answer
Fold the index card in half lengthwise. Start cutting from the folded side near one of the edges. Do not cut all the way through, but rather, stop about 5mm from the edge. Do this on both sides. Now alternate your cutting so you start from the open side, then from the folded side (zig zag formation). Keep your cuts no more than 5mm apart. When you have finished cutting the whole index card in this fashion, cut open the folded side leaving the two end folded sides intact. Open your creation into a large hole big enough for someone to walk through.Hide Answer Show Answer

Very nice. Please don't cut it out!
fascinating
5x8 in what units?
I tried it and it didn't work. Are you sure?
This even works with a standard business card which is 3.5" x 2".
Sweeeet!
This is more impressive as a practical demonstration than a written teaser, but it does work.
woooow nice one. does that realy work? only prob was i thought it was 5 by 8 feet, cause it didnt say... but that wasnt nearly as good as what it was.
What? hwo can you cut a hole that big? you cant cut a hole thats bigger than the cardor else it wouldnt work
TWO things
1. I got it good teaser
2. I did this in my pre-algebra class and it works with cpu paper the hole is HUGE!!!

math class??? we did this in science class last year. anyone who did it right got extra credit. sadly, i didn't.
this also works if the card is 5'by'
i meant 5' by 8'
It took me 3 attempts to get this to work. I knew that it could be done, but I wasn't getting it... I didn't know I was leaving out the last step each time, and I was like, "WHAT?? " But yeah. lol.
i thought it was 5 feet by 8 feet but i never would have gotten this but it does work
the dimensions were confusing - i think i did this in sixth grade but of course i wasn't listening
I thought the answer would be to hole punch it or something and then hold it up yo your eye which would make it appear to be big enough for someone to walk through.
i don't get it???
they did this on tv
i can't believe some people have enough spare time to actually do this? who wants to walk through a hole cut out of an index card? oh wait...i do!!
what if its 5x8 FEET?!?!?!?!?
anyways great teaser thats cool
anyways great teaser thats cool
this might technically go in Science b/c of its topological sense
I've done this before! It works GREAT!
i did it is my science class i didnt think about making it a teaser though lol any way good teaser.
Am I the only one confused by this? I tried to cut it out, but the last line confused me.
Sorry, I meant the last instruction.
I made a nice necklace out of a business card, very neat trick!
AWESOME! I didn't get it at first. I tried to do this, but I kept getting confused. But I FINALLY GOT IT! It only took me four index cards. I did it with a 3x5 I think. Definately not a 5x8.
lol, wow, at first i looked at it and was too confused to finish the directions, so i decided to try it. i was doing very well until i got to the 2nd to last step, when i tried to unfold it, instead of cutting the folded side. I was utterly confused, then had the bright idea to read the directions! very fun teaser!
If this was in the Trick section, I would have guessed that you would cut any hole in it, and look through it to see a person walking, hence a person walking 'through the card'.
You tape them all together. YAY ME!
P.S. I just tried it, and I probably didn't follow directions! I couldn't get it up to my knee! YAY ME!!!!
Now that's cool! I've seen this done on TV.. gotta try it myself. LOL! I like your answer, LeonRes-Evil2!
my maths teacher gave us a piece of paper and said to do this, without the instructions, (she made a competition) annoying sitting there with the paper in front of you fun teaser to do!
