| There is an alternate answer to the puzzle: Often is the odd man out as it is the only word which has 2 different vowels, while all other words have 3 different vowels.
But the number-ending foxed me completely....great one!!!! |

| Careful & Often belong together
Abalone & Canine made a cute couple
But, I couldn't find a date being Overweight |

| Nice, I thought Canine because it was the only word that was an animal....but I knew it couldnt of been that easy! |

| A little confusing even after seeing the answer since abalone is not pronounced as abal-1. But, if you go strictly by spelling, I see the point. Interesting teaser. |

Aug 24, 2005
| Nice teaser. I was a little too literal on this one. I was going to eliminate Abalone for two reasons:
1) It was the only noun; the others were all adjectives.
2) The other four words started with "round letters" (C & O), while Abalone started with a pointy letter.
Ah well...next time... |
froggie818
Aug 24, 2005
| Hmmm...in retrospect, canine COULD be a noun also, but I still felt safe with abalone, since it couldn't be used as an adjective at all, whereas Canine could...
Okay, too early for this...I need coffee... |

Aug 24, 2005
| I got the right answer, but for a different reason: Careful is the only word containing an "F". Good tease, Javian. |
trailblazed
Aug 24, 2005
| OUCH! Oh no it isn't! I oFten miss the F in often...don't mind me. Haven't had my morning coffee yet. Good tease, bad comment. |

| The nice thing about working Braingle word teasers is that thinking outside the box soon becomes the norm, which makes solving them fairly easy. Would the obvious elude us? |

Aug 24, 2005
| that was a good one. of course i didn't get it until i looked at the answer. i guess i need to look outside the box next time |

| Often is an adverb, dearies. I must say I was looking for differences in parts of speech...and I was wrong = ). Maybe I can blame it on the chicken....*gobble gobble* |

Aug 24, 2005
| Good teaser, tho I thought the answer was Abalone, as the other words spelled C O C O if read in a line down. Shrug.
I'm going to go back to my morning coffee now. |

Aug 24, 2005
| Didn't get it, but now that I see the answer I could kick myself! I thought it was "overweight" b/c overweight is the only word that has two vowels next to each other, and is the only compound word. GREAT TEASER!!! |

| Good job! Ididn't get it though!! |

Aug 24, 2005
| it was kind of easy at fist i thought Abalone then i realised it was Careful because i saw the one and nine in abalone and Canine and checking to make sure payed off |
ms_dynamite
Aug 24, 2005
| Tactfully done, however there were a few alternate answers. Some of these answers were stated in the other comments, but I chose abalone because it does not have two words within it while all the others do. |

Aug 24, 2005
| Like others, I chose abalone because it is a noun and the others are adjectives and an adverb. I felt proud of myself only because I knew how to peek at the answer! |

Aug 25, 2005
| Thanks for the great comments! I did the whole "C-O"/round letters to kind of throw people off, because I thought most people would automatically say 'abalone' but it seems there are a ton of alternate answers...A ton of people also suggested adding a hint, but I wouldn't know what to add. Anyway, glad you all liked it. |
